As of now, http://www.somethingwful.com has some of their forums open.
It looks interesting, currently reading some of it.
1)Any SD dopers go to the SA forums? I saw a Rivetz(who, If I recall correctly is a doper) and a smeghead.
2) Is it worth the $20 dollars canadian to sign up?
3) Hi, Lowtax!
Well, apparently it’s no longer open or something. Kinda weird to only have it open for two hours or so.
Maybe it’s just me.
Try Aslan’s link, with added a’s
I frequent the SA forums. I find them quite funny at times. Probably not suitable for the easily offended or thin-skinned though, as the “don’t be a jerk” rule present here is not so much in use there.
I checked them out. 2 things keep me from ponying up:
-
Do I really need ANOTHER internet forum to take up my time? The SDMB and Fark are probably enough.

Take a look at their terms of service. They go FAR beyond “don’t be a jerk”. The way it reads to me is “if we don’t think you’re as cool as we are, we’ll ban you without warning just because we can”.
I do agree that the rules are quite harsh. I’d probably register, but only post once in a while for fear of getting banned.
Although, I do think that it’s quite funny that you have to pay $5 dollars for a custom title and to change someones custom title it’s $10. Quite funny to be able to do that.
Well, it was $10 when I was on. Can’t comment on $20 and whether how it is now, but put it this way: I had to ask the admin to ban me and never allow me to buy another account because it was so entertaining I could waste huge chunks of my days just reading BS. SD gives you a big pool of knowledge, SA is much more fun.
Unless something has changed, those who got banned were generally idiots who deserved it. Yes, I felt a little sorry for clueless morons who would post “hi I’m new LOL” and be out ten bucks in five minutes, but not very.
It’s 10 dollars american.
With the exchange rate, it’s roughly double that in Canadian money.
Oops, sorry, I missed the Canadian part.
I’m a paid member. It has been a good excuse for me to practice my photoshop skills (as bad as they are). Agreed that it is definitely not for the easily offended and the maturity level at times is severely lacking, but there are enough stories/threads there that are great for a laugh (tales from the broadcasting booth being a recent one to stand out, as well as the stories from the zookeeper).
I bought rexdart and i accounts the day before they left it open to the public so we could see what was going on there. i have 2 whole posts, and spend most of my time reading getting a feel for the different boards. Good times…
I stopped in to look around and decided to cough up ten bucks for a standard membership. Maybe I should’ve lurked there for a while first.
Their cardinal rule is “don’t be a dickhead,” but that means something different over there. Flaming is common and not against the rules (although it varies acccording to forum). But bandwidth-leeching and screwing up html table format are cardinal sins. Or more precisely, $10 fines, since most bannings are automatically lifted for $10.
But there’s a lot of good content: funny stories, photoshop tutorials, people willing to give good advice and share skills.
Just my initial impression.
