I was just thinking about a song I used to hear back when I used my Pandora station. It was set to Industrial/EBM/Goth music, but it eventually always seemed to drift over to playing some of what I’d call “Ren Faire music” (artists like Celtic Woman). I didn’t mind because I like that style too.

Anyway, the song. All I remember about it was that is had a very Ren Faire/medieval feel to it. The subject was a woman who had been forced to marry a young boy (he was like fourteen or something) to form a political alliance. She wasn’t crazy about the idea, but eventually grew to love him because he was a good person. He went off to war at sixteen and died, and she was left to raise their child alone. There was a line about him being “very young” or “too young” or something like that, and a verse where she watched him playing sports with his friends.

I bet this one won’t be too hard, but my Google-fu is failing me.

Did you mean EDM (electronic dance music)? If not, what is EBM?

Was the vocalist male or female?

Anyway, the song is “The Trees They Do Grow High”, which is a traditional Scottish folk song. It’s been covered by several artists including Joan Baez, but I struggle to see her version being included in the Pandora station you describe. Maybe there’s a more industrial/goth version.

EBM is Electronic Body Music. Basically the same thing–I might be using an old term.

Vocalist is female.

And thanks - that is exactly the song I was looking for! And yeah, that’s not the version I know, but it wasn’t goth/industrial. Like I said, my Pandora station drifted a lot.

I love the version by Pentangle, but it is an folky acoustic interpretation.

Often called “Geordie”.
