Songs about animals (non-kid songs)

davethehammer If you don’t like the topic of a thread, don’t read it or post in it. Continued threadshitting will earn you a warning.

And, not to belabor the point (though I’m going to anyway), this thread is pretty much just people contributing to a group list by naming song titles. What benefit would it be to add a link?

Shannon - Henry Gross

I’ve been using and try to return the courtesy

I’m the op and I use Tapatalk to browse the Dope on the weekends. Tapatalk takes YouTube links and “helpfully” turns them in to a thumbnail of the movie clip. Instead of words. So when you post words that are hyperlinked to YouTube, I lose the words and have no idea what song you’re trying to post.

Now you know!

Also it would be super helpful if when you post an ambiguous song title you let us know what animal it’s about.

Shannon is what?

Ok, another!

“Century of Elvis” by Belle &Sebastian is about a dog named Elvis.

Jet - Paul McCartney and Wings (his dog)
Mother and Child Reunion - Paul Simon (also his dog but the title is about eating chicken with eggs)
Bungle in the Jungle - Jethro Tull

Shannon is a dog, an Irish Setter who belonged to Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys to be exact. is gone

The song also made Casey Kasem cuss,

Mona, a James Taylor song about a pet pig he had, who got into rat poison and had to be put down. “You can close your eyes…I’ve got a 12 gauge surprise waiting for you…” “When you just a football at your mama’s side, reckon everyone figured you for a barbeque when you died.”

“Fowl Owl on the Prowl”. This is the song that was used in In the Heat of the Night when they couldn’t get “Little Red Riding Hood”.

I do not even know this song, and just judging from the title…I would guess it’s not about a small river dwelling mammal that builds dams and lodges

Death of Manolete - 10,000 Maniacs (which is actually about a bull-fighter**, but acknowledges the animal)

Aerie (Gang of Eagles) - Jefferson Airplane

Shock the Monkey - Peter Gabriel

Ants Marching - Dave Matthews

Song to a Seagull - Joni Mitchell

Mongoose by elephant’s memory

So did Aerosmith. Theirs was called “The Reason A Dog”.

And, for that matter, “Animal”.

p.s. There's also "King of Birds", "Parakeet", and "Swan Swan H".

Albatross - Corrosion of Conformity

My Cat - Jack Off Jill

Kitty - Presidents of the United States of America.

I used to love her - Guns n Roses. (Axil’s dog to be precise.)

Like McCartney’s, “Jet”, mentioned above, I had no idea it was about a dog. After your post, I feel a bit less guilty now for liking it.

Others that I’m not sure have been mentioned yet:

Rottweiler Blues, from Warren Zevon, on the Mutineer album. “Well he’s dreaming about an intruder or two / And the promise of burglar blood / He’s yearning to chew on a gangster tattoo / And to hear the proverbial sickening thud.” Porcelain Monkey and Monkey Wash, Donkey Rinse are not about actual animals, unfortunately.

The Dogs They Really Miss You, from The Austin Lounge Lizards. “Their tails don’t wag, their hearts won’t heal, they blame themselves that you’re astray / They’re sorry that you felt tied down and never learned to stay / Molly’s nose is warm and dry since she watched you pack / She figures that you must be lost and can’t find your way back.”

Get Down (You’re a bad dog, baby) by Gilbert O’Sullivan

I skimmed the whole thread but did not search for the following songs. Apologies if they were already mentioned.

El Condor Pasa by Paul Simon mentions birds.

Wet Dream by Kip Adotta is about, well, fishy things.

Since the Hamburger song (The cow in the meadow goes, “Moo”) was mentioned upthread, I’m surprised that Smelly Cat by Phoebe Buffay hasn’t been put forward as a great representative of the genre.

The lyrics are indeed about the mammal. The sentiment, maybe not so much.

The Rosebuds - Nice Fox
