Songs about god or spirituality that you enjoy.

Jesus The Missing Years

“Jesus was a good guy he didn’t need this shit.”

Jesus Was a Capricorn

Iris DeMent - ‘Let the Mystery Be’ and ‘The Way I Should’

QMS - ‘Pride of Man’

Ellen Mc Ilwaine’s version of ‘Wade In the Water’

Buffy St. Marie - ‘God is Alive, Magic is Afoot’

“Jesus Don’t Want Me for a Sunbeam” and “They Hung Him on a Cross”, covers by Nirvana
“I Saw the Light” - Hank Williams

Does Heaven Can Wait count?

I am shocked that no one has brought up the filk version of “Gimme That Old Time Religion”.

My general purpose go-to playlist contains 2 overtly religious songs:

The Allison Krause “Down to the River to Pray” (mentioned above) from the O Brother soundtrack.

James Brown, “The Old Landmark” from the Blues Brothers soundtrack.

Tom Waits
Way down in the hole
Jesus gonna be here
Gods away on business
and my favorite Chocolate Jesus

Jesus is Just Alright by the Doobie Brothers

King Without a Crown by Matisyahu

Intervention by Arcade Fire. The video is not an official Arcade Fire version, and it features WWII images and messages. But if you listen to the lyrics and are not influenced by the images, it’s purely about religion.

I think he’s singing about himself there.

Ooh, speaking of Kris Kristofferson, can’t forget To Beat The Devil.

If I tried hard enough, I’m sure I could come up with a dozen or so traditional gospel/spiritual songs that I love… a few examples are “Nearer My God to Thee”, “Oh Mary, Don’t You Weep”, “We Shall Not Be Moved”, and “Go Where I Send Thee”… also “Good Shepherd” (one of my favorite Jefferson Airplane songs).

Outside of that, one of my favorites is “Benedictus” by Strawbs.

Miserere.

I always liked it because it made me think of the book The Secret Garden.

My contribution: What God Wants, Roger Waters

I do not like Neil Diamond. Except for Brother Love’s Travelling Salvation Show.

And Tom Jones’s Vaults of Heaven is totally amazing.

“Jesus Was A Carpenter” - Phil Ochs

Heaven On Their Minds

How could I forget the Coast Guard Hymn?

They left out the second verse:

God, who dost still the restless foam,
Protect the ones we love at home.
Provide that they should always be
By thine own grace both safe and free.
O Father, hear us when we pray
For those we love so far away.

God’ Own Drunk

Speaking of John Prine

Angel from Montgomery

Sam Stone

I have loved the eponymous Jars of Clay first album ever since it came out back in the mid-'90s. Start with “Flood” and “Liquid”. Lovely music, well performed.
