What songs would you like played at your funeral? Which songs would make you turn over in your grave/coffin if they were played? I like Ave Maria, but don’t want “Eagles Wings.” I liked the song “Bye, Bye Baby” as played at a funeral in the movie Love Actually, but I’m sure the priest won’t go for that.
The six voice setting of the Requiem by Tomás Luis de Victoria
‘Lifted’ by Eurythmics.
We’ve done this before and my answer hasn’t changed.
Australia by The Shins
“No one mourns the Wicked” from Wicked
“People Ain’t No Good” by Nick Cave
“It’s All Right to Cry” by Rosie Greer
“Troisieme Lecon de Tenebres a deux voix” by Couperin
“In the Hall of the Mountain King” from the Peer Gynt Suite
All You Need is Love, and maybe some early AC/DC
Ripple, by the Grateful Dead
The King Curtis instrumental version of “A Whiter Shade of Pale” from Withnail and I.
I don’t know what I’d want played at my funeral, but it creeps me out that not only does my mom know, but she has it on CD and plays her funeral CD in the car. (I get that it’s music she likes, but why not just call it that, then?)
“Hand Me the Wine & the Dice,” by Aspects of Love. The rare Lloyd Webber musical that doesn’t suck.
Play:
Free Bird, which isn’t actually AKA Oak’s Anthem, but should be.
Simple Man
Dixie–slow, mournful version.
Amazing Grace–on bagpipes.
Do not play:
Battle Hymn of the Republic–I will get out of the casket and whip your ass.
How about Birdsong and Box of Rain? Both are more obviously requiems.
Into the Mystic by Van Morrison
All Sinatra, all the time.
Always look at the Bright Side of Life ,Monte Python (Eric Idle)
Beethoven’s Eleventh Symphony.
I ain’t dyin’ until I’ve got a CD of it to be turned over to the funeral director.
We have indeed done this before, but my answer has changed a bit.
If they can get the proper musicians together: Solsbury Hill.
If not: Let It Be. Most everybody can do that one.
My Way - Sid Vicious
Kickstart My Heart - Motley Crue
Hell Awaits - Slayer
But really, fuck it, I’ll not be listening. Anyone who bothers to turn up can pick a song.
Yep, if I don’t get this at my funeral I’m coming back to haunt someone.
And since they’ll have a piper present – they’d better – I may as well chuck in “A Scottish Soldier / The Green Hills of Tyrol”… and perhaps “The Skye Boat Song” too.
Don’t give a shit, as I will be dead and not there to hear it.
I don’t care who you are or what your heritage is, Amazing Grace on bagpipes is always appropriate.
Beyond that, I would actually like a classical requiem like Mozart’s or Verdi’s. I also would love to have a modern one. For instance, I would love to have Virgin Black’s take on it (obligatory youtube link, if you don’t like the growling, at least skip to 2:20ish for the main theme and choral overlay), I just wouldn’t be sure how well it would really… play out.
