I was copying a CD to my computer and when it finished I went back and tried to listen to it.
For some reason the songs all began 15 seconds or so late. It was as if the “song starts here” code that my CD player has no problem with is out of place when copying to my computer.
Given the current rancor surrounding digital music I’m guessing that this is by design.
How can I get around this? Is there software that anyone can suggest that will defeat this? I’m currently using Windows Media Player 9 to copy. Any general suggestions for CDRipper software?
Thanks!
I’m not quite sure what you mean. Are you saying there is 15 seconds of “dead air” before the copy starts playing, or 15 seconds of song missing in the beginning of the copy?
You can do a search for MP3 Workshop. That is what I have always used. If you get it, you may wish to close and reopen the program between each cd so that things reset.
I don’t think it’s by design. Copy protection systems work by exploiting the differences between CD-ROM drives and regular CD player drives (e.g. standard CD players don’t know about sessions). Changing the track markers would affect CD players just as much as CD-ROM drives.
I read the OP as saying the first 15 seconds of each track were cut off. I wonder, are the first 15 seconds of track 2 recorded at the end of track 1? If the music is just moved from track to track, instead of missing entirely, you could paste the tracks together and make your own track breaks, with something like GoldWave or Cool Edit.
You may also want to try different software… I’ve had bad luck with Windows Media Player. CDex is pretty reliable.
The only thing I have personally experienced that is a tad like the OP: Standard music CDs have no gap between songs. The default for CD-Rs is two seconds. If the software uses the track position for the original CD in the ToC for the CD-R, each song start will be off by an additional 2 seconds from the previous. I.e., hit play, FF to song 6, the player starts 10 seconds from the end of track 5. My software has a setting to change to the gap between songs to any amount, including 0. I always do that anyway to get rid of that gap.
