Songs sung from an animal's POV

Neko Case / At Last

One of my favorite kids’ songs, Little White Duck.

Way back when I was in kindergarten (59 years ago!) we acted out this song and others, for our parents. I was the little green frog and looked like this: :stuck_out_tongue:

This is a bit of a zombie thread now, but I wanted to submit a song sung from the POV of a cat. Inspired by this thread, I made a sorta “video” to the song, using pictures of fellow Doper’s cats, besides my own and the artist’s. The captions, which identify the cat and Doper names, can be turned off or on.

Lovely!
Thanks for putting that together - and your kitteh’s are gorgeous, too! What restraint you showed in your MPSIMS thread, not showing your kittehs at the same time. You did a beautiful job on your video. What handsome overlords we Dopers have!

**The Siamese Cat Song **from Lady and the Tramp

We are Siamese if you please
We are Siamese if you don’t please
We are former residents of Siam
There is no finer cat than I am

The pre-revolutionary anthem in “Animal Farm”

Beasts of England, Beasts of Ireland,
Beasts of every land and clime,
Hearken to my joyful tidings
Of the Golden future time.

Soon or late the day is coming,
Tyrant Man shall be o'er thrown,
And the fruitful fields of England
Shall be trod by beasts alone.

Rings shall vanish from our noses,
And the harness from our back,
Bit and spur shall rust forever,
Cruel whips no more shall crack.

Riches more than mind can picture,
Wheat and barley, oats and hay,
Clover, beans and mangel-wurzels
Shall be ours upon that day.

Bright will shine the fields of England,
Purer shall its waters be,
Sweeter yet shall blow its breezes
On the day that sets us free.

For that day we all must labour,
Though we die before it break;
Cows and horses, geese and turkeys,
All must toil for freedom's sake.

Beasts of England, Beasts of Ireland,
Beasts of every land and clime,
Hearken well, and spread my tidings
Of the Golden future time.

Later replaced by

Friend of fatherless! Fountain of happiness!
Lord of the swill-bucket!
Oh, how my soul is on
Fire when I gaze at thy
Calm and commanding eye,
Like the sun in the sky,
Comrade Napoleon!

Thou are the giver of
All that thy creatures love,
Full belly twice a day, clean straw to roll upon;
Every beast big and small
Sleeps at peace in his stall,
Thou watchest over all,
Comrade Napoleon!

Had I a sucking-pig,
Ere he had grown as big
Even as a pint bottle or as a rolling-pin,
He should have learned to be
Faithful and true to thee,
yes, his first squeak should be
"Comrade Napoleon!"

Thank you! You and Lily (and Ooops) provided me with some wonderful pictures to use. I’m sorry I couldn’t get Jake in there too. I had the picture of Lily and Jake hissing at each other, but it got cut in a painful purge.

I hope to be able to use your dog in my next project to the Jane Siberry song, whenever that happens. What’s the dog’s name?

Dog Dreams, by Jonatha Brooke

Me and Rex took the car
ha, ha, stay home. Stay.
We’re gonna go through everyone’s garbage
And have the dinners we deserve.
We’re gonna find some great smelling bitches…

And then, from Reunion Tour, there’s the follow up: Virtue the Cat Explains Her Departure.

I just heard Bjork’s “Human Behavior” for the first time (that’s one kick-ass song), but it struck me that it makes more sense coming from the POV of an (indeteriminate) animal than from a person (though the lyrics keep things vague one way or the other).

I’m trying to remember a song, I think it’s a 40’s song, pretty silly. I hear a woman’s voice singing falsetto (or baby voice or whatever, something unnaturally high pitched) “yikes yikes I’ve lost my pretty stripes”, and that’s all. I tried to google around those words but had no pertinent hits. Pretty sure it’s a zebra singing.

(yikes is sung in 2 syllables - eee-ikes)

It is not exactly from the dog’s first-k9 p.o.v, but George Clinton also has an intersting and novel song about the every day sagas of a USCG/Customs drug sniffing dog.
I found the song on napster a long time ago and even the lyrics were tough to find just now. So I don’t know how easy of a song it would be to track down, but a p.m. or email could help; just sayin’…

George Clinton - US Customs Coast Guard Dope Dog

eta: the formating on that link is kind of weird, but the lyrics are on the left side the whole way down; not

(sigh)

…sure what the rest of the writing is on the right side. It seems GC did an entire album called Dope Dogs which I haven’t heard. It might be from that, but I think it is the writings of the site author.

Hmmm, what others might count? There’s plenty to choose from, technically, but the ones that could perhaps only be sung by animals:

“Everybody Wants to be a Cat”, “Under the Sea”, “Hakuna Matata” and one more from Jungle Book (“The Bare Necessities”).

“The Bare Necessities” might as well be my theme song.

also…
“Bein’ Green” by Kermit the Frog
“Wonderful Thing About Tiggers” by Tigger

There’s Los Lobos’ I Wanna Be Like You (The Monkey Song):

*I wanna be a man, a man cub
And stroll right into town
And be just like the other men
I’m tired of humping around
So, ooh-ooh-ooh, I wanna be just like you
I wanna walk like you
Talk like you too
You see it’s true
An ape like me
Can learn to be human too *

In that vein I cite a Cramps song, even though “Human Fly” is technically sung only half from an animal’s point of view:

Well i’m a human fly
it’s spelt F-L-Y
I say buzz,buzz,buzz,and it’s just be’causez…
I’m a human fly and i don’t know why
I got ninety six tears in my ninety six eyes

I am the walrus.

It’s from a children’s record by the Hollywood Singers called Children’s Playtime Songs, or something like that. Beware though, they re-released the LP a few years later with the same cover and title with a bunch of different songs that weren’t nearly as cool as the tracks on the original.
