Songs that Cheer You Up when You Are Down

In a bit of a funk recently, so I turned to Youtube and songs that always make me feel better. Three favourites:

Neil Sedaka, “Laughter in the Rain.”

Katrina and the Waves, “Walking on Sunshine.”

The Beatles, “Here Comes the Sun.”

What songs make you feel better when you’re down?

Blue Suede

I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’ - Scissor Sisters

Don’t Get Hung Up in Your Soul - Richard Hawley

If you include any music as “songs,” I’d offer pretty much anything by Vivaldi. As an undergrad, years ago, I once sought the reason for his happy music, and found a biography in the college library. Turns out he was quite sick much of his adult life (not so happy)…but his job for many years was teaching music to groups of adolescent girls, so I figured that might have been a spark for the joy expressed in his music!

My go-to song is Witchi Tai To. Thanks to this thread, it’s the first song I listened to in 2017. Makes me feel glad that I’m not dead.

Witchi Tai To
This link plays the Brewer and Shipley version and then a Jim Pepper version.

This link plays a Jim Pepper version with dancing. Very intense.
Witchi Tai To by Jim Pepper

Right this second I’m listening to the Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s concert.
It’s on radio now (glad I turned the radio on) and this evening will be on television hosted by Julie Andrews.

Among the albums that always cheer me up: “The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society,” the Small Faces’ “Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake,” and the Move’s “Shazam.”

‘Love Shack’ by the B-52’s. Hard to stay down when I hear this! And (I’m sorry to admit) ‘Sugar Sugar’ by the Archies… A lot of dance and disco music, ‘Boogie Wonderland’. Some oldies by the Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, Elvis… Dance! Dance it off, I say.

THIS live performance of Zucchero’s I Got the Devil in Me.

No way I can sit still, or be sad. And I love the intro.

“Always the Sun” by the Stranglers. Their “Golden Brown” and “(Get a) grip (on yourself)” are uplifting too.

“The Show Must Go On” by Leo Sayer is cathartic, but maybe the Three Dog Night version is more for you.

Mike Doughty – “Sunshine”, “(You Should be) Doubly (Gratified)”, “Rising Up” & “[Light Will Keep Your Heart Beating In The Future](Mike Doughty - Light Will Keep Your Heart Beating in the Future (Official video) - YouTube ://)”

Everyone Plays The Fool” by Aaron Nevill

I’ll maybe post more as they come to mind.

Layla, Derek and the Dominos
Mercedes Benz, Janis Joplin
and anything by Stephane Grappelli

I like Vivaldi too, JKellyMap.

First one that comes to mind is Sister Sledge - Thinking Of You

Also - guit pickers - play the intro - it's awsome to play!

MiM

59th street bridge song, feeling groovy.

Great Big Sea: “It’s Just an Ordinary Day”

Any of Carl Stalling’s music from the old Warner Bros. cartoons. This is an excellent compilation of his scores.

[emphasis mine]

Yeah, quite uplifting for a heroin song. “Never a frown, with golden brown.” I love that song too.

I keep a whole internal list of songs that share the theme of pulling you up and giving hope in a bad mood/situation or depression:

I Won’t Back Down - Tom Petty
or the Johnny Cash version

Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon And Garfunkelor, again, the Johnny Cash version

I’m Not Down - The Clash
sorry, no Johnny Cash, he did everything and everyone late in his life, but not the Clash

Everybody Hurts - R.E.M.

“TiK ToK” and “Crazy Beautiful Life,” among others - Kesha

The only thing that cheers me up is beer. Then, just about any song will do, as long as it is LOUD AS FiretrUCK.

Let’s go with *“All Good People” *or “Starship Troopers”.
