Songs that just freakin' rock

A million of 'em, of course, but here are a few that I’ve almost gotten busted for singing out loud when wandering around the school yard - in my supposed position of responsibility as a teacher  [And sorry for the swearing, but that’s what they’re called!) :

Mayhem - Pure Fucking Armaggedon
Turbonegro - Don’t Say Motherfucker, Motherfucker
Turbonegro - The Age of Pamparius
MC5 - I Want You Right Now
The Zero Boys - Civilizations Dying
Iron Maiden - Prowler
Black Sabbath - Symptom of the Universe
Wire - Pink Flag

Dude! I sat next to them on a bus in Arlington a couple summers ago. Had no idea who they were, and asked what their band was called. I thought they were messing with me.

Back on topic - Baba O’Reilly.

Um…Kid Rock…“Bawiddaba” (or how every you spell it)…or “Forever”, " American Bad Ass" Thanks Metallica!

Metallica…“Sad But True”

Aerosmith- “Sweet Emotion”
Alice In Chains “Them Bones”

I’m the One (Show your love) - by Van Halen. All four members of the band go all out on this song. Everything is balls out full speed up until the “Bop ba da - doo be do wa” part, and then they punch it again. I personally think it is the singlemost rockinest song ever made.

Honorable mention:

YYZ by Rush. Love those bass harmonics, latin style guitar lead, and the breaking glass sound. Best song ever written about an airport.

Got the Time? by Anthrax or Joe Jackson. This is a fast rocking, awesome, but little-known track despite its being recorded by two very different artists.

Riff Raff by AC/DC. Everything these guys do rocks, but I think this one tops the list.

Ca Plane Por Moi by the Merry Makers. Originally recorded by Plastic Bertrand which is also good, but I think the Merry Makers pound it out with a rawer edge.

Jesus Built my Hotrod by Ministry. What other song makes you want to ding a ding dang your dang a long ling long?

Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine. IMO the defiant refrain “F*** you I won’t do what you tell me!” at the end of this song is a high point in music history.

Lots of these are excellent choices, but I’ve got to heartily agree with the following suggestions:

I Alone
Man in the Box

I’m practicaly yelling along with these songs when I hear them. Stand back!

“On A Rope” - Rocket from the Crypt
“Debaser” - The Pixies
“That’s When I Reach for my Revolver” - Mission of Burma
“Cherub Rock” “Today” and, slighly more obscure, but the rockingest of them all IMHO, “Jellybelly” - Smashing Pumpkins
“Swimsuit Issue” - Sonic Youth
“Seek and Destroy” - Metallica
“Black Dog” - Led Zeppelin
Pretty much any Jimi Hendrix
A slower one that “rocks” - “Waiting for Superman” - Flaming Lips
“Jimmy’s Fantasy” - Redd Kross

And many more which slip my mind…

Oh, crap, one more:
“Orgasm Addict” - The Buzzcocks
Oh, and one more for good measure:
“Sound of Carpet” - Stereolab

Her Strut – Bob Seager

Touch Too Much – AC/DC

Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana

Down On Me – Janis Joplin/Big Brother and the Holding Company

Black On Black, or Barracuda – Heart

Mississippi Queen – Mountain

Immigrant Song – Led Zeppelin

Sweet Child O’ Mine – Guns N’ Roses

Talk Talk – Talk Talk

Rock and Roll Fantasy – Bad Company

“Brackish” - Kittie
“Back In Black” - AC/DC (their best, IMHO)
“The Stroke” - Billy Squier
“Highway Star” - Deep Purple
“Santa Monica” - Everclear
“All The Time” - Green Day
“Ironhead” - Helmet
“Bad Reputation” - Joan Jett
“Bawitdaba” - Kid Rock
“Wargasm” - L7
“Are You Gonna Go My Way” - Lenny Kravitz
“Sweet Home Alabama” - Lynyrd Skynyrd

“Agony” - The Muffs
“Come Out And Play” - The Offspring
“Volcano Girls” - Veruca Salt

Just a few personal favorites.

Okay, I’ll list some of the more rock oriented tunes that really … well … rock. Okay, most of this is electronic rock, but you can’t expect me to go all the way.

Ministry Thieves (live)
Tool Hooker with a Penis
Bile Ura Fucking Loser
Nine Inch Nails Last
Chemlab Suicide Jag
16 VOLT The Enemy
Skinny Puppy Tin Omen
Hate Dept. Hitback
Girls Against Boys Park Avenue
Unit:187 Loaded

“Kashmir” - Led Zeppelin
“Born to Run” - Bruce Springsteen
“Run like Hell” - Pink Floyd
“One” - Metallica
“Fugue in G-minor (BWV 542)”, JS Bach

“amazon” by the Melvins (heaviest song ever) and

“Jimi” by the Butthole Surfers, though it helps to be “mind-altered” for that one.

“Lit Up” - Buckcherry
“Monkey Wrench” - Foo Fighters
“Angels of the Silences” - Counting Crows
“Three Seeds” - The New Meanies

And plenty of stuff by the Reverend Horton Heat.

Get Over It, by OK GO.

Child in Time - Deep Purple
Radar Love - Golden Earing
Rock ‘N’ Suicide (and the entire Ziggy Stardust album) - David Bowie

Classical off the beaten path:

“Dance of the Knights” and “Tybalt’s Death/Finale of Act II” from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet.

“The Gun Fight” from Aaron Copland’s Billy the Kid.

Alborada del Grazioso by Maurice Ravel.

Just about any part of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring.

Though I have been known to be partial to Metallica, Dream Theater, and Fugazi as well.

Is it even possible to listen to Led Zep’s In the Evening on anything less than 10, doing anything less than the hardest head-bang? I think not.

Other Rawkin’ Good Songs:
I Wanna Destroy You - The Soft Boys
Dusted - Leftfield
Pistolero - Juno Reactor
Seven Days - Cracker
Welcome to the Jungle - Guns ‘n’ Roses
Aisha - Death in Vegas (vocals by Iggy Pop)
Rosa Parks - Outkast
Wonderboy - Tenacious D

… and pretty much anything by Weezer.

“Hold Your Head Up”, by Argent. Back when I was working at the Fremont, and hadn’t got my dealing chops yet, and they played '70’s music in the casino, that song got me through many a bad day. And it just rocks.

“All Along the Watchtower”, Jimi Hendrix version

“Pretty Vacant”- The Sex Pistols

“My Way”- Sid Vicious (tops the list of songs I want played at my funeral)

“Tie Me To The Length of That”- Public Image Limited
