Here’s a hearty, one-fingered salute the folks who lost our Vaio Extended Service Warranty!!!
The hard drive started going bad during Xmas week, and when we called for support, they didn’t seem to have any record of the contract we had purchased back in March of 2005. “Sorry, we can’t help you, but give us your information, and we’ll search our system and call you back” No call back, of course. Well, the laptop limps along for the next week or so, and then it boots up with the “Hard Drive Imminent;back up your data!!” screen. Crap.
Back on the phone to Sony. “Sorry, we don’t have any record…but give us your information, and we’ll call you back (the sequel)” No call back. Sooooo, my girlfriend, who is playing the “bad cop” to my “good cop” gets on the phone and reams them a new one. “Okay, we’ve found your info, we just need to update our system, here’s your contract number.” Meanwhile, drive has stopped making noise, we run checkdisk, it fixes a few errors, maybe it’s okay now (ha ha).
This weekend: hard disk failure screen, blue screen, oh joy. Call Sony: “Sorry, that contract number isn’t in our system…fax us your proof of purchase, please.” So, we fax the original receipt, copy of warranty registration slip, and credit card statement with $330 charge to “Sony Extended Warranty”.
Sony calls back: “Okay, you’re really in the system now…” Well, at this point, we’ve found a local guy who will replace the hard drive for $250…so, fuck you, Sony, we just want our money back.
“Oh sure, but you’ll only be refunded a pro-rated amount, since you’ve had service since March of last year…, plus, there’s a cancellation fee of $25…”
Huh? For the last month, you’ve REFUSED TO PROVIDE SERVICE because YOU DIDN’T HAVE A RECORD OF OUR CONTRACT!!! “Sorry, but you’ll see that’s covered in the terms of the contract.”
See you in small claims court, Sony.
