The sopranos has twisted me so viciously, that when they set up Feech and sent him back to prison, I was saddened. Of course, they’re all terrible criminals, but Feech was this old guy, still not sure what the NEW family was all about, and he liked telling his stories (Like my grandpa does), and he was confused! And now he’s going back to die in prison.
I’ll go out on a limb here (but it’s a confident limb), I predict some event will lead to Tony and Carmella having one more ‘conjugal’ encounter. Her loneliness, his frustration…it will probably be something with AJ, Tony will have to comfort her…bam, right back in bed.
Did I need to see Lorraine (is that her name?) crawling around naked? Not so much.
I also thought in the last shot that Tony had cleared out the furniture, and I have to admit I cursed him out loud! He’s being such a dick.
But we recorded it and when we had a second look, it did seem that perhaps the emptiness of the foyer, and the shot, was illustrating Carmela’s alone-ness.
Perhaps it was left a little ambiguous intentionally, to keep us speculating until next week?
This old guy is the one who beat the landscaper so bad he had to pull his kid out of college to help. That landscaper now has his client list shortened, AND kicks back to Paulie, AND does lawns free for Paulie.
He was told to do what he was told, not to start stuff, and he steals a bunch of car’s at Tony’s friend’s daughter’s wedding. Doesn’t use Tony’s shops, then kicks back AFTER it comes up. Told again, no freelancing.
Tony sends Christopher around with other guy, who drop word of the TVs. Feech knows Christopher is Tony’s protege, so the job is probably under Tony. He offers his garage - and wants a cut of Tony’s action for it. His greed set him up. Oldest story in the books. Greeks called it hamartia when it was the hero. For these
villains, it’s called being a greedy %^&$#.
Silvio looked like he wielded a little power behind the throne here, advising Tony.
Maybe. But I bet that HS advisor makes his move first. That wasn’t his office they met at the second time…
The Madame Bovary bit wasn’t exactly subtle, either. “Hey, I think you’d really like this novel about a woman who marries for excitement, but is bitterly disappointed and finds solace in a series of affairs.”
I’m guessing he figures he can get a little action out of it before she makes it to the end.
Could a high-school councelor really have the balls to rush in where Furio feared to tread, though? Or does he himself think “M. Bovary, c’est moi”, (he mentioned that he had similar reasons for marrying) even after reading the whole thing, and figure Carmella is a good option?
I don’t think that she had any idea that the book was 150 years old. I hope that they show her trying to buy it at Borders and looking for it in New Releases.
By the way, my wife and I also pondered the empty house thing. I remembered the promo they showed a couple of weeks before the first episode was shown. They showed that clip as part of the montage of scenes. As I recall, the scene right before that one was Tony yelling something about the separation. It was edited to make it look like he emptied the house. In the actual episode I got the impression that it was Carm looking into a big house where she felt totally alone.
I don’t think that was ever meant to go anywhere. My take was that it was intended to give AJ a dose of reality. He may see his family as “better” than working-class types, but this showed him they are not in the same league as the old-money bluebloods.
Carmella often faces a similar sense of inferiority about her lack of education, that actually turned up again in last Sunday’s show.
This wouldn’t be the first time an episode ended with a shot that was practically a freeze frame, but didn’t end up leading to anything. Remember the last shot of the ep where Ralphie was killed?
Tony wakes up in the Bing, calls out for “Christopha” and gets no response. Winks and scrunches his eyes as if they hurt, squints at the photo on the wall of the murdered stripper, and finally opens the door to the outside and walks into blinding white light. So he’s going to lose his sight because Ralphie sprayed him in the eyes with the insect repellent or whatever that was? Apparently not; just one of Chase’s arty, wish-I-was-David-Lynch shots.
Carmella definately wrote phonetically. She did a great job of looking confused. Carmella has now managed to successfully run off everyone in her family.
Having someone whacked who is probably a made man (and a legend according to Tony) is never a good idea. I assume feech was a made man. Sort of like how he had to cover up the Joey Pants accidental whacking.
I like how Tony might actually realize that it’s not a popularity contest. Maybe his bullshit meter will be a little more accurate.
All AJ needs is a little bit of discipline. He gets to do whatever he wants. They never stick to their punishments, and he can talk his way out of anything. I loved the staredown between Tony and AJ when Tony told AJ to go do his Spanish homework.
Does anyone else still freak out everytime they see the annoying kid from Doogie Houser, MD?
My son told me all about the episode (he saw in on HBO at a friends house). I had to download it, so I didn’t see it until about an hour ago. I loved it. Anyway, the turd (he’s 20) didn’t even mention to me that LT and DLR did guest appearances! I’ll bet he didn’t recognize them. Which is unusual, because as far as I’m concerned, he’s a musical savant when it comes to groups of the 70’s and 80’s. He’s only recently become a football fan, so I’m not so surprised that he missed LT.
They suggest that what happened to Feech, in the real mob world, would be considered far worse than actually whacking him, in that it’s disrespectful. It’s like saying that he’s not significant enough to whack. Tony had better hope he doesn’t manage to get out.
I doubt this story is finished. Even if it is, though, it’s OK, because there are just too damn many plot lines to finish already. As some have pointed out already, they’re not even using Steve Buscemi yet, four episodes in. They’ve set up more than enough plot to carry the show through next season. I think Feech will end up back in action and play into the Little Carmine vs. Johnny Sack drama somehow.
Tony’s treatment of AJ isn’t really settling well with me. I know that this is what we’re supposed to see in a divorce–kids pushing the limits, parents being overly permissive and generous–but it just seems like too much. It shows a stunning lack of insight, even for Tony.
I downloaded the ep, and didn’t get to see the previews for next week. I can’t imagine they’d whack her so soon, but I don’t see how she can last much longer–much less through another season and a half. (Not that she’ll end up dead, necessarily, but it’s that, Witness Protection with or without Christopher, or jail.)
I didn’t recognize Lawrence Taylor. I knew DLR was going to be on the show, but it’s cool that he was playing himself.
Furio is from over there, where the Mafia is even more violent - plus, T&C were still together then.
Paulie had information, as he was a recent captain. Feech has been out of the loop a long time.
Still, is this setting things up for some of Feech’s friends to retaliate?
She probably thinks he invented the Flowbee.
But whacking a boss is even harder. Tony could order it on Feech, he’s the Don of Feech’s family. Feech would have to get outside approval. Johnny Sack is a captain, right? Whoever he reports to…
Recall Tony was reluctant to hit outside his family - Johnny Sack looked to Tony for help when he wanted to kill a higher-up (the boss?), as Tony is a boss. Johnny couldn’t do it himself.
Ah, Johnny took care of Big Carmine just fine. Like Carmine would’ve just keeled over like that so soon after Johnny asked Tony to help whack him. Tony knows it, too.
