Sopranos: 5/2

Yep. It was left to our imaginations, but it would seem as if Ade probably let the FBI know that Tony B. is now running a casino on Bloomfield Ave, or at least set up an appointment to say as much. Stay tuned for the next installment…

Also, is the YES Network now available on cable in Manhattan? I remember when the network first started how the local cable provider in the city refused to give into some financial blackmail on the part of the station owners.

I don’t know if Finn really understands how serious these guys are about the whole gay thing.

I mean, he was really shocked when he witnessed the beating that day. To anyone who really knew the whole story - i.e. that these guys are ‘made’ mobsters, and that even a rumour about being gay can mean they don’t earn and possibly they die - that beating wouldn’t have been at all surprising.

So he’s afraid of Vito, but I think he just fears he’s going to get beat up or something. I don’t think he’s even considered that it might mean actual death for him. If he did, I think he’d be on a plane by now.

On the other hand, what can Vito really do? The kid is the boss’s daughter’s boyfriend, now fiance. And although he can’t know for sure what finn has told Meadow, he can’t really afford to take any chances. If he kills or even threatens Finn, it might get back to Tony S., and then the question of ‘why’ will almost certainly come up.

And in other areas…

I think Ade has put the wheels in motion for the downfall of Tony B. She’s playing Lady Macbeth here, taking down a percieved impediment to her husband’s advancement. She calls the FBI contact, rats out the Casino, Tony B gets taken down and Christopher can move in.

Of course, in the process she removes Tony B from the picture, thus easing some tension between Johnny Sac and Tony S.

I can’t wait to see how it developes…

I thought that Meadow is supposed to be at Columbia, no?

The previews showed Christopher in tears. I think Ade may get busted as an FBI snitch.

I also think the writers are setting up Johnny Sack for a hit. He’s too much of a loose canon for Tony to let him keep running his mouth and making threats.

Johnny Sack is out. I don’t know how soon, but he practically threatened Tony…“If I find out you’re lying…” Tony will rub him out just to simplify his life.

I’ve got a sneaking suspicion Ade and Carmella are going to join forces against the mob. The only way Carmella can stay alive and get revenge is to roll over.

Finn is gonna screw that little tart he’s been flirting with, and Meadow is going to find out. They’ll probably bury him at the ball park.

my bad, you’re right, she just seems like a NYU student

I thought Finn paying for the dinner with the familiy was a completely idiotic thing to do, in any social situation.

I had enough trouble ever being able to pick up the check in a restaurant when I went out with my father. And he wasn’t a mob boss even. It’s just not done.

If I’m a college student and my girlfriend’s father is taking me out to dinner, I’m sure as hell not going to pick up the check. The only way you can do that is if you tender the invitation and you say before the dinner starts that you will pick up the check.

I don’t where the hell Finn thought that this would have been a friendly gesture on his part. If he wants to do something nice, then he should have invited Tony to his apartment and cooked him a dinner.

Now Tony has to side with Little Carmine against Johnny Sack. If Sack finds out about Tony B, Tony S is screwed. With Sack gone, that problem is fixed. Little C is a buffoon but probably easier to control.

Poor Vito. He looked crushed, all dressed up in his Yankees shirt, stood up on his date. I really think that he just wanted to make friends and let Finn know that everything was cool if he kept quiet.

Meadow is in major denial. She really does know about what her Daddy does and how those guys operate. Remember the tantrum at Jackie Jr’s wake? She certainly suspected he was hit. Remember in Season 1 or 2 where she showed AJ the web site where they talk about the family so he could learn what their family really did? My God, she is such a self absorbed little piece of fluff, no different than her Mom but at least Carm is somewhat self aware.

The lying prieviews make it seem like someone gets whacked next week, someone slim. No way they could toss Vito over the bridge like that. Finn? Chrissy? Sack? Tony B?

Haj

Agreed. The problem is, I just don’t see Ade as having the kind of brains it takes to pull it off without a hitch. But then, I had no idea she had such a sneaky side to her, so I may be off base. I really had written her off as nothing more than blond eye candy. I’m really impressed with her this season, I like what they’re doing with her character.

Is it just me…or does Finn have ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE who Meadow’s father is? I mean, the man’s name is in the papers, on the news…yeah, he’s from California, but he’s been going to school in New York for four years, now. Shouldn’t he have at least an inkling that all the special treatment is coming from somewhere? Also…somethin’ tells me if he touches that little chicky in the office and someone finds out, he’s going to be two testicles short of a full load…

Does anyone think that Tony would hesitate for a second to take out Carm if she pushes to hard and to far in the divorce proceedings? All I coud think about last night is when the lawyer is telling her about the accountant who can dig up money trails is that Tony would end up getting nailed by the IRS if this came out in court.

I think that things are about to get far uglier than most of us can imagine.

PS- I too loved the headstone. Go Silvio.

I thought this was one of the best episodes of the year. I get a little sick and tired of the Soprano fans who knock the show as boring, tedious, or uneventful unless somebody gets whacked. Or offed. Or whacked off. (Thank you Peter Griffin). While I enjoy mob movies as much as the next guy, I liked the Godfather and Godfather II, and the Sopranos, not for the mob setting, but because the characters are interesting and unpredictable. I like the guessing what is going to happen, the interplay between the characters, and the intrigue.

Maybe that’s why I really liked this episode. Some of the highlights for me:

  1. The lunch with Carm and Tony, when Carm told him she was going through with the divorce. It was a great scene with great acting, and Gandolfini at his quietly menancing best. I liked the fact I went from hating, to piting, to caring for, and back to hating Carm this episode. Complexity in characters and their development has been a long time gone from regular television.

  2. Vito confronting wimpy liberal Meadow-boy at the john. I love the fact that even in this thread, nobody is really sure if Vito was asking wimpfuck out for a date, if Vito was subtly threatening him, or if Vito was trying to be platonically friendly with the boss’ daughter’s boyfriend. When he reached in for the tickets, my wife gasped and thought Vito was going to shoot wimpfuck. Classic.

  3. Tony S. confronting Tony B. when he found out that Tony B killed Joey Peeps (loved the headstone). Gandolfini’s work was great again, and I was fascinated that Soprano was so impressed by Tony B’s IQ. I like Tony B, I think he can really help Tony S, but he’s pissing off Chris which will make it interesting. Ideally Paulie gets his, and there’s room for both.

  4. God I hate Meadow. Why can’t Johnny Sacks shoot her?

A great episode filled with what I love about the show.

Did they say on last night’s episode that Meadow may go to med school? I know Finn said he was going to dental school. I thought Meadow planned on law school???

<< Does anyone think that Tony would hesitate for a second to take out Carm if she pushes to hard and to far in the divorce proceedings? >>

No way. Anything happens to Carmella, and the government/cops/feds etc are now looking for the estranged husband. They’d have the excuse to investigate everything and everyone, subpoenas and search warrants and all. This wouldn’t be a case of a “business associate” disappearing, it would be his wife, and the Finger of Suspicion would be very heavy handed.

I think Carmela may well be the most immature character on the show (save A.J.). She seems to persist in this fairy tale notion that some man out there will make her the center of his universe. After wondering about the potential future with Tony, she laments like an adolescent about the single phone call following the party. Then, simply because Tony fails to visit when dropping off A.J., she takes the huge step toward formal divorce proceedings. Gee, Carm, ever think you could make a call and discuss things like an adult? I thought she had made some progess when she called out her mother for putting on airs during the party, and yet she still refuses to admit that she enjoyed the role as the boss’s wife. She certainly had no problem throwing her (his) weight around when it suited her in the past.

I’m not sure how calculating Joe Perry is being with Meadow. Could be he is stressed out and grasping for some stability in his life. Remember the bim at the construction site talking about how “the ring” changes everything in a relationship. There is no particular reason why he should listen to her advice, but I assume the dialogue was there for a reason.

Gandolfini was brilliant in this episode. It is easy to take his talent for granted, then there is an episode like this where he has one great scene after another expressing the various sides of his character.

So Carmela thinks she’s going to get any attorney at all to help her take half of Tony’s illegal gains? That’s rich. And very stupid of her. She should take the house (it’s in her name), sell it, and be grateful. I really have no sympathy for her at all. Remember back in Season 2 or so when the shrink wouldn’t take her “blood money,” and told her to leave Tony, take the kids, and get out? She knows exactly what she is, but she’s a fool if she thinks she can get the justice system to play along with her little theory that all that money is rightfully half hers under the eyes of the law. She doesn’t think the gummint wouldn’t seize the ill-gotten assets before giving 50% to her?

Meadow is disgusting. That whole all-night argument-cum-proposal gave me the shivers, and not the good kind. But the best part was, truly, serving chili on the hottest night of the year, A/C on the fritz, and then bitching about it when recently traumatized Finn wasn’t eating it. “I told you I was making dinner tonight!” Little witch.

I really do feel this Vito thing spells death for Finn. (I have not been so shocked, when seeing Vito’s head pop up from Security Guard’s lap, since when Michael Caine kissed Christopher Reeve on the mouth in Deathtrap.) I took the beating-up-of-the-mustache-joker scene as a simple illustration how that crowd feels about gays; Finn sees Vito smoking choad; Vito (who has killed Meadow’s beaus previously) will die if this gets out; therefore Finn must die. Engaged or not engaged. Too bad for Finn, but it beats being married to Meadow.

(If Finn had any sense he’d take the suitcase out again and just disappear for a good long time, but it’s been made abundantly clear that Finn doesn’t have any sense.)

Dio, wasn’t it “Unidentified Black Males”? That lets the bear in.

I like the analogy a lot.

…but remember what happened to Lady MacBeth…

Christaphuh is weeping next week in the previews. I think he discovers something about Ade’s ratting and is caught in the horns of a dilemma. The Family isn’t treating him very well right now but if he doesn’t report her betrayal, he’s breaking the code, and he’s Made too. If he does report on her, then at least I think they’ll avoid the cliche that he has to be the one who kills her. Even though he’s been treating him pretty badly this season, Tony still loves Chrissy and wouldn’t make him do that. Maybe he’ll ask Tony B., and then Christopher will kill him and then himself, thereby robbing Tony S. of his future and confidant all at once.

Regarding the chili scene with Finn (Joe Perry) and Meadow: Finn had just come from witnessing the beating of the random jokester… Came home to find chili on the table. Funny thing is, when I saw the beaten guy’s face, I thought, Wow. Looks like chili.

No wonder he couldn’t eat any of it.

Watched the episode again last night and I’m still amazed that Vito could fit himself into that position in a Jeep Cherokee.

Curses! I’ve been watching the show on TMN in Canada, and they didn’t play any previews of future episodes on Sunday night. Any Canadian viewers know if TMN plays the previews at some point?

I figure Ade is gonna get whacked this season, if for no other reason than to free up her schedule so she can be in that wretched sit-com next season. The big questions of course are who and when?

I just can’t see Chritopher doing it. He may know about her betrayal and what it means, but I bet he balks at actually pulling trigger.

So who does the deed? If Tony does it himself, he’ll be a basket-case afterwards. Killing Ade is going to mess up the whole crew in a deep way. Maybe even worse than Big Pussy, who at least was a guy and went to this thing with his eyes open about what might happen.

One of the reasons I like Carm’s character is that in a TV universe populated by hyper-intelligent people, Carm really isn’t intelligent. She can be very savvy, but she can also be naive and self-centered and make amazingly bad mistakes/judgment calls. And I love that she is pretty much the only character on the show who can really give Tony shit without fear. I truly don’t think Tony would ever harm her. The worst he would do to her is cut her off financially and socially. I tend to be very sympathetic toward her because she stands up to Tony more than anyone else. It’s fun to watch them clash: Tony is incredibly powerful outside of their marriage, but in it, Carm’s roughly his equal.
