Sound in Ella Fitzgerald's "How High the Moon"

This is just one of several recordings of Ella performing this masterpiece. My question is: Is there a name for what she’s doing at 6:57? It’s sort of a growl, overlaid with a normal voice. When I try to duplicate it, all I get is a chicken-screeching noise.

Sounds like throat singing (skip to around 4:10). More info here. Also search for “throat singing” on You Tube, there’s a bunch of examples.

Great recording! I agree, sounds like throat singing to me. Unexpected for Ella but her instrument was incredibly flexible.

My question is sorta OT. In looking at the video player itself, there’s a little button I’ve never seen before – next to the high/low definition setting option that says “360p.” The button kinda looks like a soccer ball and when you press it, you hear this awful creepy noise. What the heck is it?

It’s a “vuvuzela button” in honor of the World Cup.

Thanks! I thought that might be it, but I’ve only heard about those things (I’m not watching the World Cup). Also it seems so pointless, not to mention it’s strange that it’s not on all the videos.

Ah well. They’re the billionaires, not me!

If it’s a recording with Oscar Peterson playing piano, it’s Oscar making the noise, which can be heard in most of his recordings. Ella mentioned that it was sometimes difficult to tune him out.

No, this was just Ella.

Too bad Peterson never did a duet with Glenn Gould (as far as I know).
