Soundtrack of Your Life (As Divined by Shuffle)

I scrobble my music over at Last.FM, and I have a friend who enjoys it, too. Well, he had noticed something of a poll/survey or, as he sold it to me, a meme. You get a list of about ten to fifteen lifetime defining events, and then pull up your music library, and put it on shuffle. And see what gets pulled out of the depths of your music collection to provide color in your life.

I tried this. I knew it was going to be ironic. I knew it was going to be a bit warped.

I did not expect my iTunes to mock me!

So, in an effort to see whether I can find someone who has even less lucky songs for love/romance events I’m sharing the list here, and my own responses.

Enjoy!

The list of events:

Waking up:

Peppermint Patty, Vince Guaraldi, from the album Oh, Good Grief

First Day At School:

One Too Many Mornings, Kingston Trio, from American Troubador

A little odd, perhaps, but the sort of stuff I was expecting.

**Falling In Love: **

And here begins the cheap shots at the idea of me and a love life. It’s still the worst one of the lot, but far from the only one!

Intermission track from Christine Lavin’s Live at the Cactus Cafe.

If you’re not familiar with the album, this track is not quite dead space to break up the show: Fifteen seconds of people moving in chairs.

Fight Song:

Vatican Rag, Tom Lehrer from That Was the Year That Was

Breaking Up:

Glowworm, Spike Jones and His City Slickers

Prom:

A Woman in Love, Marlon Brando, Guys and Dolls movie sountrack

Life:

Ghosts of Cape Horn, Gordon Lightfoot, Gord’s Gold II

Mental Breakdown:

This one better be good, dammit.

Rising in Love, by David Roth, On a Winter’s Night

So, in order for me to think I’m falling in love, I’ve got to got nuts. Again? Pbbbbhhhht.

Driving:

夜明け, by 野見祐二 Off the 耳をすませば サウンドトラック Album

Really, it’s too mellow for driving music.

Flashback:

It’s listed on my iTunes as “Ilikethis”, and I think it’s Sakamoto Maya singing. From the Escaflowne Soundtrack album: Lovers Only.

Getting back together:

Oh, my Og. My iTunes hates me.

RE: Your Brains, by Jonathon Coulton.

I know I have a loveless life, but egads, can we try for subtle from here on out? Please?

Wedding:

I’m not sure I want to know.

Le Deserteur, Peter, Paul and Mary, from the album Peter Paul and Mary Live in Concert

So much for subtle.

Birth of Child:

*I’m trying to think what would the worst song I could get for this. There’s just too much to think of…
*
I Say a Little Prayer, Mary Black, off her No Frontiers album

Not bad, really.

Final Battle:

The Bells of Rhymney, by Pete Seeger from his Best of album.

Not bad, really. (Though I was hoping for March of Cambreadth)

Death Scene:

The Ballad of Mad Jack, Schooner Fare, from Closer to the Wind

Funeral Song:

Victim/Volunteer by Christine Lavin, off of Attainable Love

End Credits:

Rippy the Gator, Arrogant Worms.

So, you see, it’s official: My iTunes hates me.

I’m posting this in a hope someone will end up with worse selections than me.

Opening Credits:

Ancient Forest - Clannad - Mood piece. OK

Waking up:

Other Side of This Life - Jefferson Airplane - Fitting, sorta

First Day At School:

Whipping Post - Allman Brothers - That’s not funny!

Falling In Love:

Little Liar - Joan Jett - Now it’s just mocking me.
Fight Song:

Mary’s Place - Bruce Springsteen - This will work. I’m a partier, not a fighter.

Breaking Up:

Thunder Child - Jeff Wayne - From the “War Of The Worlds” Soundtrack. Fitting.

I’m not really a meme person, but why not?

Opening Credits: So Happy Together - Beatles Well, considering it’s about being with someone, and I’ve never dated, that’s… ironic? Does that actually count as ironic?

Waking up: Black Invader (Beelzemon’s Image Song) - from Digimon Tamers. That’s more like it
First Day At School: Sonne - Rammstein
**Falling In Love: ** Zone Digital - Digimon Tamers I’m not sure I like what that’s saying

Driving: Gump - Weird Al :dubious:
Flashback: Your Magic Put a Spell on Me More disco
Getting back together: Futari de lalala - Gillmon & Takato’s Image Song from Digimon Tamers *Uhhhhh… well, considering this is a very childish sounding song. And, as I recall, it’s kinda sweet, but… hell, I’ll just look up the lyrics.

There are only things I don’t know but
If you are here, I’m not scared
Don’t let go of our clasped hands
When I’m alone I get lost right away

My dream was always smiling
The day you were really born
I’m getting close to being strong
That is the courage that I’ve gotten from you

(not the full lyrics, promise)

It’s kinda sweet but childish. *

Wedding: Supernaut - Black Sabbath I… what?!
Birth of Child: Glitter & Gold - Jem and the Holograms Here comes gold! Glitter and gold! That works, right?
Final Battle: Evolution Redefined - Geoff Moore and the Distance Christian rock. Christian conservative (but still fun) rock. Ooookay
Death Scene: Sweet Leaf - Black Sabbath Stuff like this is why I love having my stuff on shuffle
Funeral Song: Los - Rammstein *Another one I have to look the lyrics up of. Translated lyrics Um, okay.
End Credits: Airline Amy - Weird Al

I don’t think this illustrated anything except the scope of my music likes.

Opening Credits:

Buttons by Sia. Huh, you know, this would be a good opening song for a movie. We might be on to something here.

Waking up:

The Kind by Steve Earle.

First Day At School:

Le Retour by Yann Tiersen. Ok, uh, I guess there are probably some schools out there that rock out to musette waltzes.

Falling In Love:

Railway by Dispatch. Yeah, that’s right, baby, I love like a long sleek locomotive, mmmmmmmng. Also, this song majorly gets on my damn nerves.

Fight Song:

Rainy Day by Guster. Damn: what with this song and the previous one, the movie we’re making here might as well be called “Middle School Adventures”. That aside, an appropriate song for a melancholy fight.

Breaking Up:

Forgiveness by Patty Griffin. Oh man. Probably my favorite song ever ever ever of anyone ever. Well, this would make a passing fine breakup song, I think. I’m torn up that I have to “next” this song. In fact, I think I’ll let this one play out. Eat it, Shuffle.

Prom:

Bandages by Hot Hot Heat. Welcome to Pleasant Bluff High’s 85th annual after-prom deathmatch!

Life:

A Patricia by Los Destellos. When they ask me why I did it, I’ll tell them it was all for Patricia. Seriously though, if I have to have my “life” (let’s not get too specific here, guys) resemble a song, you could do worse than Peruvian cumbia.

Mental Breakdown:

Rain by Patty Griffin. Wow, another devastasting Patty Griffin song. Is this thing rigged?

Driving:

Kiss the Break of Day by the Mammals. Well, a slightly tepid song, but if it’s made for anything, it’s a big-sky driving montage, so fair enough.

Flashback:

Ford Econoline by Nanci Griffith. True fact: when I was a child I was a middle-aged Mormon woman on the run. Another true fact: apparently, half of my life events are accompanied by songs by people with the sounds “ee griff” in the middle of their names.

Getting back together:

Fee Fi Fo by the Cranberries. I don’t know if I’ve ever really heard this song. It sounds kind of like every other Cranberries songs. It doesn’t really sound happy, though (but do they ever?).

Wedding:

Older Chests by Damien Rice. Aw, this actually would be a really nice bittersweet wedding-scene song. No snark here.

Birth of Child:

Dracula by Gorillaz. Looks this one’s gonna be a C-section…

Final Battle:

Latin Simone by Gorillaz. Way to switch it up, iTunes. Well, at least I know who I’ll be facing in the final throwdown.

Death Scene:

I Can’t Explain by the Who. Perfect.

Funeral Song:

Papercutz by K-Os. Like the stinging pain of tiny lacerations, so too shall my death agonize. Like papercuts. No, sorry; papercutz.

End Credits:

Take 'Em Away by Old Crow Medicine Show. Hey, this would actually be excellent over ending credits.

Opening Credits: Spineshank, “The Height of Callousness”. Life is like that.
Waking up: Operation Ivy, “Healthy Body”.
First Day At School: Death, “Flattening of Emotions”. That’s appropriate.

Fight Song: Dååth, “From the Blind”. I’m not fighting blind people, I swear.
Breaking Up: Talking Heads, “Give Me Back My Name”. No comment.

Mental Breakdown: Earthride, “Valiume #10”. An ode to a sedative.

Wedding: Talking Heads, “Sax and Violins”.
Birth of Child: They Might Be Giants, “Twisting”.
Final Battle: Winter, “Eternal Frost”. I would’ve picked something a little faster, but this works.
Death Scene: Bathory, “Song to Hall up High”. Oh fuck yes, I’m going to Valhalla!
Funeral Song: Lisa Loeb, “Wishing Heart”. Meh.

Fight Song: *Money City Maniacs * - Sloan. Yeah. That’s how I fight. By pointing and laughing at people… covered… in… coke fizz. Yes.

Breaking Up: *Big Mess * - Devo. Whoa. But… yeah, no. I wouldn’t hurt anyone. But you know, I sure as hell felt that way once… that’s a pretty good one! Except I’m a girl. But… whoa. Best not to think about that one for too long.
