Source for Immigration statistics online

I’m trying to find information on the number of immigrants that came into VT over the last five years, and am having a hell of a time finding a decent source even hinting at that online. Anyone know of any good census statistics site or anything like that?

I don’t think INS keeps anything that will break down stats by state; Census Bureau is a good starting point, but you might check whatever your state’s Dept. of Health & Human Services is called. They are usually the ones who detemine things like state funding levels for refugee resettlement and such, at least in Illinois they are.

Good luck!

This is a start, but only gives information for a single year:
http://eire.census.gov/popest/data/international/tables/IN-EST2001-02.php

At http://www.census.gov/ you can select a state from a small window on the right and go to a large collection of pages.

On this second page of the Vermont statistics for 2000, (requires Adobe) we find, for Foreign Born:

Europe 8,971
Asia 4,455
Africa 511
Oceania 173
Latin America 1,210
Northern America 7,925 (lotsa Canadians)

As Eva Luna pointed out, the INS does not publish much on the web (although the Census Bureau claims that most of their immigration numbers come from the INS).

Just had another thought; at the state level, there is usually one immigrant service agency that is designated to administer refugee/immigrant statistics collection to determine who needs services provided (and in what language, and therefore probably by which immigant service agency). When I worked for Jewish Vocational Service in Chicago in 1990-1991, it was the state-designated agency.

I don’t know who fills this role in Vermont, but I bet if you call an agency or two you will get a good start. Some of the ones with a national presence are Jewish Vocational Service and Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (two Jewish Federation agencies), Catholic Charities, World Relief, and Travelers and Immigrants Aid (now known as the Heartland Alliance for Human Needs and Human Rights, here in Chicago anyway). Plus there are zillions of state and local immigrant service agencies.

I’m guessing the cite above on “foreign born” won’t tell you when they immigrated, so probably won’t give you the specific data you need. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
