"Sousa's Liberty Bell March ends in a fart." A Fart??? A Fart???

I put in one of my Monty Python DVDs the other day and somehow I accidently started playing it with the captions for the hearing impaired.

The show opens: “It’s”

As the music starts there is a caption at the bottom of the screen reporting that the opening music has begun- Sousa’s Liberty Bell March.

As the opening titles come to an end the caption reads:

Huh?

Now I like a good fart joke as much as the next guy, but the sound at the end of the openings titles of Monty Python’s Flying Circus is clearly the sound of the Chicken-Man getting squished by the giant foot!

It’s obvious! Chicken-Man dashes across the screen, giant foot comes down upon him, cue noise.

There’s no fart about it! It’s the sound of a Chicken-Man getting squished by the giant foot!

I always thought the chicken man farted *as *he was squished. If I wasn’t watching, I’d hear it as a fart. Perhaps a fart sound is the sound effect used to indicate said squish?

Can you think of a better description of the sound to put on subtitles? It’s clearly not “squish.”

Subtitles are often… ah… amusing in their own light. And sometimes revealing.
