This is simply beyond belief. I really hope there is some kind of statistical bias in these findings, but even if there is it’s still utterly atrocious.
South Africa has been the rape capital of the world for a while, but those figures are incredible…
Think about it. Walking down the street, one in four men you see has raped a woman.
And, technically, that 1 in 4 is just the ones willing to admit it to the MRC.
I never thought of that.
Damn. That’s fucked up.
This seems more appropriate for the Pit. Ah, it appears it’s already there. Maybe a Mod could merge the threads?
Link wouldn’t work for me, but don’t worry, I won’t rape you over it.
Curious sidenote: This page has ads for Hummers, rabbits and BJ’s.
It works for me all right. Horrible story.
Seriously dude?
Anyway, here are the first three paragraphs, in case you’re interested.
A somewhat more detailed analysis here.
Some of the results are surprising -
Others are not -
I wonder if the rapes happened mostly in the cities, where I would expect income levels and educational levels to be higher than in the country, Those who were able to remain in the cities would tend to be those with jobs and income, and therefore more likely to rape.
The other factors are common in the US too, so less surprising.

Shodan
Here’s a WAG: the participants were paid (a pittance) for the survey, so the respondents skew to the poorer side of the population, which causes the results to be skewed a bit. But maybe this is just wishful thinking on my part. It just sounds odd to me that so many people were willing to fess up to raping someone as part of an “anonymous” survey.
Except, as stated, the ones who raped were more likely not to be poor or unemployed.
Ah yes, what young man can forget his first gang rape? It’s practically a rite of passage.
They’d only have a problem with fessing up if they saw something wrong with what they did. If rape isn’t viewed as negative in their culture or sub-culture why not fess up? Also, if it has reached this level of commonness I’d be surprised if there is much successful prosecution going on so they wouldn’t be at risk either.
With fabulous excuses like this…
*“And it’s partly rooted in our incredibly disturbed past and the way that South African men over the centuries have been socialised into forms of masculinity that are predicated on the idea of being strong and tough and the use of force to assert dominance and control over women, as well as other men.” *
…it’s highly unlikely to change anytime soon.
“My mother and father got the short end of the race stick, so I think I’ll go rape someone now.” A$$holes.
Were levels of rape in South Africa always this high? I’m kinda curious what they were under apartheid.
You do realize that this was part of a statement from a woman researcher decrying the social conditions that gave rise to the situation, not a feeble attempt by some guy to excuse his behavior, right?
Her complete statement in context was
1 in 10 men said they had been raped by other men too. Incredible to me that the HIV incidence was not higher among the rapists.
It’s also true that many men there believe that having sex with a virgin will cure aids, so they go out and rape very young girls. (A perversion of the “The only safe sex is with a virgin” abstinence-only BS the Reagan administration started over there.)
I say let’s provide every SA woman a handgun. Same as I’ve always said about airline flights - just give a gun to everyone as they get on. Much cheaper than all this pointless searching. . .
No. Not seriously, Dude.
I bet you are the life of every party.
Coming from a racist scumbag like you, that’s really saying something.
Anyway, getting “the short end of the race stick” as you put it, doesn’t explain the historically high rates of rape committed by white South African men. The fact that white South Africans committed rape at higher rates than their cousins in Britain and the Netherlands was one of the many arguments used against apartheid.
Strange. Historians might argue that the Colored community in SA owes its very existence to rape on a massive scale.
It may be that the habit of viewing women as property is a hard one to break across the board. It’s clear that the Dutch settlers took large numbers of Khoisan women as willing and unwilling concubines.
Did the Xhosa, Zulu, and other Nguni peoples adopt the settlers’ attitude towards women, or did they have it already, being largely warrior peoples bent on conquest with rape of the vanquished being a common practice? The Zulu and Xhosa were certainly polygamous, and wives were “bought” from their families in exchange for cattle.
The one group in SA who seems to have had an equitable relationship between the sexes is the traditionally monogamous Khoisan peoples.
Thanks, I am. But then we don’t get that patented ‘I won’t rape you over it’ wit much where I go out. I mean, there’s a time and place for every type of (clever) joke, but this is fucking dire information.
