I have just been offered a job in Naples, FL. I am probably not going to take it, because it would be a 32% paycut. However, I want to make an informed decision. I am going to do a little research, but if anyone has any little tidbits of information they’d like to share about this area I’d very much appreciate it. My plan is to hold out for something between Tampa Bay and Lee County that pays a little more, but if I find out that Naples is the Most Beautiful Place On EarthTM then that will certainly factor into my decision.
Never been there - but apparently, in Naples, condoms do not belong in schools.
It may be close to being The Most Beautiful Place On Earth. I’ve been through there fishing and touristing several times, and I liked Naples.
At one time, it also had the highest per-capita income of any city in the U.S. (cite, some National Geographic of long ago, IIRC.)
That doesn’t necessarily mean a high cost of living, but it might. You should check out cost of living before taking a pay cut to move there, IMHO.
Good luck, whatever your decision.
I’m going to call them back today and turn down the offer. I would dearly love to take it, but I think I can do better and accepting such a big reduction in salary would just be settling for less than I deserve. I started this thread on the off chance that someone would come in and tell me about the Bi-weekly Naples Naked Woman Parade or Free Clambake Tuesdays all summer long, but since nobody has done that, I’ll assume there’s no good reason to reduce my income by one third in order to move there.
Although I did learn something from the frantic research I’ve been doing since yesterday: Apparently, Florida has no state income tax! That might have offset the paycut some, but not that much.
I believe they have golfing there. And many many elderly men in golfing pants. And large mosquitoes and sticky humid heat. If this entices you, go.
