South Park 4/19

Pretty dull outing. They were commenting on an issue that wasn’t very timely in the first place (in contrast to some of their very up to date stuff) and was never very interesting to begin with. I think it was mostly just to do the concept of Oprah’s vagina and asshole. Which was certainly… i dunno, different. The phone gag was pretty good.

And the lesson at the end was pretty funny. Don’t smoke to get good ideas. Have good ideas, and then smoke to REWARD yourself for them.

I don’t think it was too bad. The voices were great – especially Gary (that was Matt Stone, right?). The novelty of Opra’s talking crotch got old pretty fast, but this didn’t come close to Worst Episode Ever.

I’m not a South Park expert, but I’m pretty sure Matt and Trey are no strangers to drug and alcohol use. I’m almost certain I read an article in which they admit that the Chef character was inspired by an acid trip. This episode had that written-while-fried feeling to it – if one or more intoxicating substances was not involved in the production, I’d be surprised.

In that context, the last line of the episode about not getting high before coming up with ideas could work as meta-commentary. To me, it seemed like they were saying “Yeah, we realize this is a dumb episode, but hey – it was funny when we were stoned!”

I don’t know, maybe I’m giving them too much credit.

Yeah, I guess you had to be high. To quote Towelie, “I have no idea what’s going on.” Especially why Oprah’s private parts had English accents.

OTOH, only time I didn’t feel like hurling whenever Towelie was in the show. “Towelie, you’re the lamest character ever.” “Yeah, I know.”

My brother has a talking Towelie that says things when you squeeze its hand.

…and, uh, that’s all.

I admit, I thought it was amusing when he said “Chapters 4-18 just talk about Doritos!”

You have me curious, what do you consider the worst episodes of South Park then? I can’t remember any this bad.

Jim

I think this was actually a shelved episode, in the sense that it was about something that happened a long time ago and that it was such an un-funny episode.
I think the fight between Comedy Central and Parker&Stone has caused them to say : “Hell with it. We’re not making a new episode. We still have this crappy one laying around, so let’s just air that one”.
Least funny episode ever (and I loved the last few ones).

Don’t get me wrong. I DO think this was probably the worst episode ever. But I dont think it’s worth complaining about. Because it was still entertaining (especially the end), and the WORST South Park episode is still magnitudes better than the BEST Mind of Mencia.

… God that guy is just NOT FUNNY!!

I’m 110% positive that I don’t think you understand how ratings scales work.

Worst episode I’ve seen in a long time.

Getting assraped by a deep-frozen rhino is better than the best Mind of Mencia.

I’m afraid to ask how you know this…

I agree. It was one of the most boring shows SP has ever put on. I almost turned it off.

I’m not really sure. The Mr. Garrison sex change episode sticks out in recent memory.

I always set my expectations a bit low before watching South Park – ever since the beginning I’ve considered Matt and Trey’s style of humor extremely hit-or-miss. I watch for the hits and try to shrug off the misses.

Do I think the latest episode was a miss? Yeah. Do I want to single it out as the Worst Episode out of the last 9+ seasons? Not quite.

Ok, you’re not alone in disliking or hating that one, I found that one funnier than this episode and at least the kids were in it. I even enjoyed the Great Expectations episode. So for me this was the worst.

Jim

I, too, liked the Great Expectations episode, so you have a kindred spirit there.

I don’t know if this week’s episode was the worst. It’d be hard to beat the 22 minutes of complete unmitagated suckitude that was the Mr. Garrison’s sex change episode or my personal favorite for the worst episode. “Erection Day”

Hey, me three. Was this an episode that people generally disliked? I thought it was cool.

I heard a lot of people complain about it and it is rarely shown. I haven’t seen it in a few years. I liked it, apparently many others did not. No details or cites, just stuff I have heard.

Jim

I’m gonna dissent from y’all and say that I kinda liked this episode.

“All you need to know is that I’m not Oprah’s asshole” cracked me up.

The concept of dialogue from a woman’s vagina and anus goes back at least to the 15th century; specifically, a French fabliaux translated as “The Chevalier Who Could Make Cunts Talk”. Not making this up.

Now, I rather doubt if this was the inspiration for the show. For one thing, I don’t think either Parker or Stone have ever read a book.

I think that this single sentence is funnier than the whole episode.

More likely “inspiration.”.
