I just caught this one online. Freaking loved it! Just hearing the premise of Cartman going to Somalia to become a pirate I was already prepped for hilarious shenanigans. Oblivious to the amount of danger they were in, he ends up becoming leader of the pirates. I really liked the choir scene where he instructs them on the minutiae of their vocal delivery.
And my nomination for best line of the episode: “They were French so they surrendered immediately.”
It was an episode that was just begging to be made and they milked it pretty well.
Though how the hell the kids didn’t go nuts during a 49 hour bus ride I have no clue. I’ve done a 5 hour bus ride and it soured me on greyhound for a long time.
The high point for me was the letter from Ike, describing the utter banality of his existence, including having to listen to people drone on about Susan Boyle singing from Les Miserables.
Yes I almost forgot about that part - I believe he phrased it such that if he heard one more person tell him about her he was going to puke his balls out through his mouth. Elegant, and sums up the issue perfectly. Bravo!
Here’s the condensed version: Susan appeared on “Britain’s Got Talent.” 47 years old, never married, lives with her cat, quite plain looking. Crowd hushed. She opened her mouth, the crowd goes wild, Simon was wowed and offered her a recording deal. International YouTube phenom.
Generally an awesome episode. The one minor thing that bothered me was that Cartman make a big stink about who was allowed to be Pirates, and kicked out the ginger kid. But he let Ike stay after saying Jews can’t be pirates!
Regardless, it broke my suspension of disbelief (yes even for South Park) trying to imagine Cartman not jumping on a chance to dig on a Jew or Jew-by-association.
No . . . it’s very well established that Ike is an adopted Canadiann. Like Baraqiyal said, look at the beady little eyes and floppy head. Haven’t you seen the movie?
I haven’t watched South Park in years but when I heard about this ep I watched it and thought it was great- highly recommend it even if you are not into SP. As usual, I am impressed how quickly they can turn a current event into a cartoon.
They hash this stuff out all day and all night long. I remember them talking about their typical week’s schedule on one of the DVD commentaries and it is very, very intensive. Not only are Matt and Trey witty, hilarious, intelligent guys, but they have excellent work ethics to boot. Of course, it helps that they have an army of writers, animators, producers, and directors helping to make their vision a reality. But they are major role models to me.
Yeah, I know how much of a fanboy I sound like right now.
To humor you…yes I knew Ike was adopted from Canada but 1) Canadian and Jewish are not mutually exclusive and in any case 2) adopted children of Jewish families are generally considered Jewish themselves
And even if those weren’t true, it’s hard to imagine that Cartman would allow him some kind of exception.
But he was circumcised and went to Jew-Scouts (he was a Squirt).
From Cartman’s POV–he thinks “Jew” is contagious–Ike should be a Jew.
Still a great ep, although I would have liked to see the Cartman turns the Somalis into “real” pirates part expanded quite a bit–Pirate Cartman’s reign of terror would have been hysterical.
