I’ve only seen a few episodes of “South Park”, and decided to rent the movie. I was laughing from beginning to end. A few questions, though:
-
What’s up with the “Brian Boitano” thing? Is that a running joke on the TV show that I’m not in on, or was it just a bit of absurdity for the movie?
-
I know that the shtick is that Kenny dies each episode. Is his constant returning to life ever explained on the show? Or is it just one of things we’re supposed to accept without questioning?
-
Is the end of the movie the only time when Kenny’s full face is shown, and he speaks un-muffled, or is this common in the TV show?
That’s all that comes to mind off-hand, although I’m sure I’ll have more questions for regular TV-show fans after I’ve seen the movie again.
The whole show is filled with non-sequitirs so don’t try to read too much into any of it. I haven’t noticed a Brian Boitano running gag but Kenny getting killed and the hate for Barbara Streisand are running jokes. I don’t think I ever heard Kenny talk in the TV show and that’s why it was a dramatic point in the movie.
1.) Brian Botano was in the pilot episode that started the whole thing. Kind of a running gag for the show.
2.) Yes, accept it without quesiton.
3.) This was the first time that his face was revealed.
Wow, for once I can authoritatively answer a question!

It isn’t exactly a running gag, but it did first appear in the original proto-SP short film, “The Spirit of Christmas.” While witnessing a fight to the death between Jesus and Santa over who embodies the true meaning of Christmas, the kids ask, “What would Brian Boitano do?” at which point he shows up to offer advice. Boitano probably just struck them as an unlikely hero for an 8-year-old boy.

It’s never really explained, but it is often the source for some good meta-humor. (My favorite: At the beginning of “Cartman’s Mom is Still a Dirty Slut,” Kenny, who was killed in Part 1 of the cliffhanger, simply fades back into the scene. Kyle and Stan nonchalantly glance over and say, “Oh, hi, Kenny.”)

IIRC, prior to the movie Kenny’s face was never seen; the back of his head may have been, though. Definitely, his unmuffled voice has never been heard.
Brian Boitano was also seen, VERY briefly, in one of the exhibits on Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Boat Ride.
You know, if you still have the movie you might want to go over it again with freeze-frame. There are an awful lot of hidden gags.
For instance…one of the soldiers has the name “Jesus” (see the name tag).
Keep your eyes peeled during the beginning of the South Park TV show; Brian Boitano skates by briefly, just before Ike/Mr. Hanky/whatever hits the sign at the end of the theme.
Another hidden thing: during one of the very first episodes, the letters above the chalkboard in Mr. Garrison’s classroom include the sequences “kEnNy” and “bAsTaRd”.
A hidden thing from the movie: when Kenny is taken to the hospital, there’s a list on the wall of doctors and their duties for the day. One doctor’s name is ‘No’ and his assignment is “kill Bond”.
About the movie: I have a theory that it’s divided into three distinct parts. The first is marked by the thrusting into the camera of the newspaper clipping that says, “Terrance and Philip’s First Movie!” The third is marked by the Mole looking at his watch; above the time display, you can read the text, “Third Act: The Ticking Clock”. But for the life of me, I can’t find the second act. Anyone, anyone?
And the man who supplied Kenny’s goodbye voice is none other than Beavis and Butthead’s Mike Judge.
(1)Brian Boitano is actually in the second pilot for the show.
The first pilot has Jesus fighting off a possessed Frosty the Snowmnan.
That very first pilot is tacked on to some Troma releases of Cannibal the Musical (and the the South Park movie has a couple of referential jokes to this as well).
(If I’m wrong about which pilot came first, please correct me).
(2) There’s a X-mas episode where Kenny doesn’t get shmucked, but otherwise, he always dies and returns on the next show without explanation.
(3) As per previous posts.
Cheers!
I consider myself to be very good at identifying voices and I refuse to believe that was Mike Judge. His voice is very recognizable (Beavis, Butthead, Mr. Anderson & Hank Hill (basically identical) Boomhower, Dooley) and that sounded nothing like him, and it sounded just like Stan or Kyle (i.e. Parker or Stone). Minnie Driver was listed in the credits (I forget what character) and I don’t hear her either. I know they’ve used celebrities in ridiculously small roles (Jay Leno as Cartman’s cat & George Clooney is Sparky the gay dog) in the TV show but I think those credits are some kind of “thank you” in-joke.
Dammit!! I hate it when I actually know the answer to a question but get to it so late that I’m about the 20th person to give the answer!!!
Dammit again! I can’t believe I’m wasting my sacred 100th post on this rant!!!
Well, George Clooney provides the voice for the doctor in the movie–the one who tells Kenny they have replaced his heart with a baked potato.
