South Park season finale--banned?

We only have 181 posts to go to beat the record set back in March.

Not the same thing. I think we are mocking the Catholic League in this thread more than complaining about SouthPark.
In that thread, a few people over-reacted to a silly episode.
The episode the Catholic league is complaining about, is probably more of a hit on AA than the RCC.

Jim

They even had a commercial a little while ago, where they said, “Jews… Hindus… Gays… Straights… The Disabled… If we haven’t made fun of YOU on South Park yet… we’re sorry.”

Who was it that said a few dozen posts back that religious folks are so bored they have to find themselves something to complain about? I agree.

A lot of groups will ignore the show UNTIL it makes fun of them. Then the torch-bearing villagers will show up.

Not having seen the episode in question but having read a description of it, I think the episode is poking fun not at the Catholic Church, but at the various statue-related miracles that have been reported over the years, using the recent blood-crying Virgin Mary as a source. Part of the reason the Catholic League was outraged is because the episode fell on the eve of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation commemorating the Catholic decree that Mary was born free of sin and remained a virgin throughout her life (I think- I was raised in a Catholic family, but was never taught the catechism). One wonders if there would have been as much controversy if it had aired on a different date- they probably would still be offended, but one wonders if they would have been as offended as they were. (I’m always amazed at what the Catholic League misses- earlier this year, there was a Simpsons episode about Bart converting to Catholism which was postponed due to the death of Pope John Paul II. Among the jokes were a poke at the Church’s anti-birth control stances involving Homer showing Marge a pamphlet called “Plop 'Til You Drop.” I thought for sure the Catholic League was going to force them to pull the episode, especially since they’ve complained about jokes about the Church’s birth control stance in the past. They said not a word. I don’t know if any of you remember the kids’ show Histeria, but they forced them to remove a sketch from one episode depicting the Inquisition as a game show called “Convert or Die,” but didn’t say a thing about a sketch involving Martin Luther rattling off a David Letterman-style top ten list of changes he’d make to the Catholic Church or problems with it or whatever- I forget- which included adding “Get Out of Purgatory Free” cards and drive-thru confessions. “That’ll be three Hail Marys and an Our Father. Do you want fries with that?”)

My roommate recorded the South Park episode on DVR during it’s airing on Dec 7th. I’ll be certain to make sure it doesn’t get deleted.

I burned a copy (along with the rest of the season) to DVD-R. That makes two copies.

This is probably the work of the ultra-conservative Gelgamec Catholics.

I tivo’ed it when it aired. I made it about half through the show before I switched it off. It really wasn’t a very good episode.

Personally, if it doesn’t make it to DVD I think it’s no big loss.

I agree. I kept wondering when their Xmas episode was going to air and by now just figured they weren’t doing one this year. I completely forgot about Bloody Mary until now.

It pales in comparision to the last three years: Red Sleigh Down, Christmas in Canada and especially Woodland Critter Christmas were all classics!

Haven’t watched South Park in years - the voices are too much like Gilbert Gottfried on helium - annoying beyond belief.

However, I was sorry I missed the Scientology episode. I would have turned on closed captioning and muted the sound to watch that!

But I am surprised anyone is surprised at the reach of the Catholic church…as a Gay man who was force-fed that religion of bigotry and hypocrisy, and a current ex-Catholic (surprise, surprise), I still know that the Catholic cult is widespread and it would only take a phone call from the Vatican to squelch it.

Talk about your irony, seeing as if it has been pulled, this episode will live in infamy.

I wasn’t sure I could say what I wanted to here, so I started a Pit thread: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=352090

Ya’ Know. I laughed more reading that article than I did whatching the damn show!

That article was well worth not being able to see that episode again.
