This isn’t really the right place to post this, but I decided to put it here because of the number of complaints in recent days regarding Spam in peoples’ SDMB mail addresses.
Head over to http://www.SpamCop.net. You can register for free and they will send you a URL via email which you bookmark. Then, every time you receive unsolicited email, just paste it (and all headers) into the form on that personalized page. They send all appropriate messages to the offenders’ ISP’s!
It works! Not only do you stop receiving the spam, but the offender is often shut down.
Let me repeat once again that we safeguard member information as closely as possible and we do not sell this info to third parties.
However, if you choose to show your email address in your profile, we cannot keep someone from reading through profiles and harvesting information.
This is exactly why we disabled the Member list function, to make it more difficult for spammers to get your email address. They might get it, but they have to work for it.
I recommend that you hide your email address in profile information and only share it with people that you trust. To change your Profile, click on the “Profile” icon in the upper right hand corner of any SDMB page and follow the prompts.
I’ve also noticed that email addresses are pretty much only accessable by following a separate link to get them. That way spammers cannot find email addresses from going through the html of a page looking for mailto’s. I like that.
