Spam samosas (or other recipes)?

My kid’s Cub Scout pack is having a ceremony dinner and we have chosen Spam as the featured food. Needless to say, I am never going to find a recipe by doing a Google search.

Being Spam, most of the parents are planning to make sushi or Hawaiian dishes. I thought that I might be able to make some decent samosas, so I’d appreciate it if anyone has a recipe. I’m open to other suggestions though, so don’t limit yourself.

Thanks.

Do you mean you CAN’T find any spam recipes with Google, or WON’T? Because the first hit for “Spam Recipes” is here.

But without even looking at that site, I’m thinking texmex is the way to go with spam. Spam enchiladas, spam tacos, spam quesadillas all seem pretty easy to make and probably go pretty well with spam.

In the same vein, I found a spam eggroll recipe that looks pretty good. Easier than samosas, because you can use premade wonton/eggroll wraps.

Hell, if I were going to make spam samosas, I might just go fusion and use the above egg roll recipe and simply add cubed boiled potatoes, green peas, and toss the filling with a bit of garam masala. Roll or fold in triangles with eggroll wrappers.

I think I just threw up a little in my mouth…

This may sound horrid, but a good number of people have been surprised by it…

[ul][li]1 can Spam, cubed[/li][li]1 head cabbage, cut into 2-3 inch pieces[/li][li]onions, celery, and whatever other veggies you feel like tossing in - the amount and exact composition can vary widely[/li][li]Black bean garlic sauce (Lee Kum Kee brand if you can find it)[/li][li]Chili garlic sauce (again, Lee Kum Kee if available)[/li][li]Anything else that sounds good to you…[/li][/ul]
Cook the cabbage in a small amount of water over medium heat until it’s softened somewhat, stirring occasionally. Optionally pre-brown the Spam and perhaps throw the veggies in with it to soften them up. Toss the Spam and veggies in with the cabbage and let it cook for awhile longer (sadly, I can’t be more specific). Liberally add the black bean garlic sauce and chili garlic sauce, stir well.

Serve the whole simmering brew over white rice.

I haven’t made this in a while, but it’s got my mouth watering as I type this. The above “recipe” is pretty loosely defined, and every time I make it I improvise a bit because I can’t remember exactly what I did the last time. Doesn’t matter much, though - the flavors work together surprisingly well…

You could also search recipe sites like Allrecipes and Epicurious.

When I was a lad, Spam was called Prem. I’m sure Spam was available, but Mom bought the Canadian equivalent.

The standard method of preperation was to bake it in the oven all slathered with a glaze made of more-or-less equal parts prepared mustard and brown sugar.

It was pretty good.

I’m a vegetarian, so I’ve never tried it, but a friend of mine is from Hawaii and one of her specialties is Spam musubi. She says it’s great.

Spam musubi is great.

OK, how about this: Spam-salad sandwiches just like dad used to make.

Grind the Spam with a meat grinder. Add Miracle Whip (yes, that’s what to use) and sweet pickle relish just as if you were making ham salad. Chill in the fridge. Serve on soft white (Wonder or Webber) bread with no condiments.

Actually, someone else offered to make Spam musubi… for forty kids, parents and guests. I’m looking forward to it!

devilsknew, I like your idea of making Spam eggrolls around the samosa filling. Thinking about it just now though, it seems like wontons might work as well, and they would have more breading to approximate the samosa wrapping. Whaddyathink?

Thanks. I did try several different searches. In most instances the word “Spam” was used in reference to bulk email. FWIW, I did find a recipe on the Hormel Spam website for a Spam ratatoulli pie which I may also make (Most of the kids liked the movie.)

Kimchee and Spam fried rice! I learned about it here on the Dope!
