My friend is a kindergarten teacher. Recently she had an addition to her class of a little Mexican girl who speaks very little english. She knows her colors and the names of the kids. That is about it. The parents speak no english.
My friend is at a loss for communicating with her and just speaks to her and uses gestures. It is probably harder on the teacher than the girl.
Any links or phrases for daily communication for spanish on an elementary level would be appreciated.
I am off to google …
Your friend needs to ask the principal and school board when they’re going to institute an ESL program. That little girl may be the first Latina in your friend’s school district but she certainly won’t be the last.
Which doesn’t help now, of course. The girl will learn English quickly, especially in a kindergarden setting. I think I’d tell your friend to contact either a local Latino/a group or university for some guidance.
