Each their own. I like the pseudo-Latin phrasing. Certainly its less annoying then adopting faux-accents, which is the usual way TV shows try and make things seem foreign. If nothing else, it adds to the humour.
He’s got a few decades till he crosses the Rubicon. At the time of the Servile Wars his family has been ruined by Sulla, and he’s trying to work his way back up from the bottom (hence his need in the TV show for Crassus to cover his debts). So I find a younger Caeser having a “nothing to loose” kinda attitude believable. If nothing else, its nice to see them go with something other then the usual calculating, aristocratic characterization that’s been done to death other places.
(I can even see this Caeser being a successful lawyer, in the “Jeff Winger” mold of spouting sincere sounding BS without caring if its got anything to do with whats being argued.)
Actually, that’s an entirely fair point. I think I bought into Colleen McCullough’s Caesar so heavily, anything else doesn’t sit right in my head. The Caesar in my head has way too much dignitas, even at this young age, to behave in this way. Risk taking, yes, but not … trivial… I suppose.
I come and go on the pseudo-Latin. Sometimes I hardly notice it, then one phrase will be either particularly well turned or else so stilted that it stands out and I’m reminded they aren’t talking straight English.
I have to say I have been pleasantly surprised by the twists and turns the writers have managed to find in the story. Every week I wonder, how’s Sparty going to get out of this one, and the writers find a plausible way. It could easily be a boring war story (with blood and sex and more blood) but I’d buy it for the twists and turns.
Historically he’s in Spain till after most of Spartacus’s army is defeated. He shows up to finish off some of the survivors and then gets back to Rome first with news of the victory, stealing much of Crassus’s thunder.
So I doubt they’ll put him in. He doesn’t show up till after Sparty’s likely death and its kinda late to throw in a new character.
As they say, history is written by the winners.
I am sure Caesar will get some revenge. Since BwanaBob mentioned upthread Junior is a made up figure, they can dispatch him anyway the writes like.
How many episodes are left? Is this the final season?
I have to admit, I’m watching more to finish the show than out of any significant engagement in the story or characters. I really enjoyed this show at first but this last season has left me a bit flat. Too much over-stylized slow-mo leaping up in the air yelling while camera does a 360-degree wrap around fighting. Not terribly compelling “bad guys” and the the “good guys” have at this point very heavily compromised themselves.
I like this season a lot so far. I was a little worried about what they would do because they specifically spent a lot of time centering their show around the House of Batiatus and Capua. Without those, I was afraid that the show would get a little aimless based on some of the aimlessness in the last season. But they’ve done a good job introducing new characters that are decent after clearing the deck last time out. I really like Crassus as a character and Caesar isn’t bad, either.
