You came in that thing? You’re braver than I thought.
Folger smiled. What other response could there be?
Good news, everyone! We have a mission to further the noble cause of intergalactic peace.
We come in peace! (Shoot to kill, shoot to kill.)
Surely, I have made my meaning plain. I mean to avenge myself upon you, Admiral. I deprived your ship of power, and when I swing around, I mean to deprive you of your life.
I’ve done far worse than kill you. I’ve hurt you. And I wish to go on hurting you. I shall leave you as you left me, as you left her; marooned for all eternity in the center of a dead planet… buried alive! Buried alive…!
Honor Alexander-Harrington had forgotten there could be that much pain in the universe. She knew it was a miracle her mother and her son had survived, and she knew she would never be able to express how unspeakably grateful she was for that incredible gift.
Yet that gift came at the price of a dark and personal agony, for it was the last gift, the last miracle, Andrew LaFollet would ever give her. And now, the last—and the most beloved—of her original Grayson armsmen was gone.
He scanned her, and saw nothing in her posture but grief which would have escaped the eye of anyone by a scanner.
First Sight and Second Thoughts, that’s what a witch had to rely on: First Sight to see what’s really there, and Second Thoughts to watch the First Thoughts to check that they were thinking right.
My brain’s human, and no human brain could leave such possibilities untested. I wonder, though…I do wonder–
“You’re the one who put me in charge of the Navy, Daniel in charge of research, and Collin in charge of Intel, Father. I don’t think you did it because you expected us to sit on our brains.”
I guess we use mnemonics all the time without thinking about it much.
Some day, I hope, there’ll be a billion like him, and we’ll really have a Mnemonic Service. “All their lives,” Sheffield went on, "they do nothing but read, look, and listen. And train to do that better and more efficiently. "
You’ll still be studying the day you retire. But even these subjects are not your education; they are simply raw materials. Your real job is to learn how to think.
“Folks, we’ve got to face the truth. We’re here, and we’re here to stay. Forever.” He paused. “Forever,” he repeated. “We can’t think in terms of tomorrow, or the day after. Or even next year. We’ve got to think in terms of decades. Centuries.”
She reached over and took his hand. “It’s a place to begin a future.”
But, okay, you know the future that people in the 1950s imagined we’d have? Flying cars, robot maids, food pills, teleportation, jet packs, moving sidewalks, ray guns, hover boards, space vacations, and moon bases. All that dazzling, transformative technology our grandparents were certain was right around the corner.
I remember years before the end there were a lot of Scobie robots around and people were afraid they would take away their jobs and stuff like that. They didn’t know the half of it.
I am all there is

To do what was right
