Speaker of the House 2019

No, see- fuck Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, & Ro Khanna. They dont understand how Congress works. Sure, a Dem Hose could pass medicare for all, but it wont get past the senate or Trump.

There’s no use wishing for things that can’t happen.

And you see, the idea behind this "rule’ is to get rid of the crappy insane tax cuts for the rich.

Pelosi is smarter than you, and smarter than me, and much smarter than Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, & Ro Khanna. Trust me, Pelosi has a plan. Something those two dont.

Care to explain how this one works?

Need money for your favorite barrel of Pork? Well, you have to pay for it. Hmm, how about reducing that tax cut we gave the rich?

It also:

  1. Forces the Republicans to play by Republican rules.
  2. Prevents Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez from grandstanding on unpassable College-For-All or Medicare-For-All bills which will never get past the Senate to even be vetoed by Individual-1.
  3. Can be changed in a more favorable political environment.
  4. Can be used to refute the usual “tax and spend” bullshit arguments the Repubs make.

To me, #2 is the best reason, tbh. I want C4A, M4A, whatever. But I don’t want two political neophytes (and, yes, in working in a major party environment, Sanders is a neophyte) and their supporters blowing our wad too fucking early.

From the rules (#10):

The way you’ve quoted the wiki article conveys the opposite of what the article is saying. Please take more care in selectively quoting sources.

And this gets past the senate how? Or rather - in what way does this pass the senate that “just give me the pork” or “just give me the reduction of that tax cut” doesn’t?

How? Should the republicans get a unified government again, absolutely nothing stops them from simply doing away with this rule. And I’m sure the republican senate would be thrilled to be in a situation where they’re forced to combine their spending cuts with their tax cuts - that’s the point of the tax cuts to begin with.

Cute, but y’know what else does that? The gavel of the speaker’s seat. I mean, what’s the concern here? That they waste all the time on the house floor debating this? If Pelosi wants to stop that, she can, because she’s the speaker.

It doesn’t make sense in any political environment.

You seem to have missed the part where the republican party completely dropped out of sync with reality. People accused Obama of “tax and spend” despite the fact that most of his second term was spent chasing ill-conceived republican austerity measures and meeting utterly unreasonable dickbags in the middle. I don’t think this will stop the tax and spend arguments, any more than “this theory could not be more stupid and insane if it was made up to troll you idiots” will stop the QAnon people.

Again, we don’t need damned neophytes fucking shit up. Do you not remember 2016 and how non-Democrat Bernie Sanders helped fucked things up? Last thing we need is to have the kids in charge - that’s what the other side has, at least on an emotional and intellectual basis.

Anyway, here are the rules and legislative agenda.

I remember 2016. But I also remember Democrat Hillary Clinton doing a heck of a lot more up-fucking than non-Democrat Bernie Sanders.

…I like Ocasio-Cortez. And I think she’s taken a stance that fits with her principals. I’m not prepared to call her “stupid” for that. I think “pay-go” sounds like a terrible idea in principal and if it were introduced down here I’d be fighting it every step of the way.

But you are right. Pelosi is smarter than me. And there are much bigger issues at play here. I cannot begin to comprehend the multiple issues at play here. I’ve long advocated for my “chaos theory of organization.” That a complex system, like the US Federal Government, need tight control and oversight in order for “the machine” to keep working as expected. Remove the controls and the oversight and things will keep chugging along for a while, but eventually things will start to fall apart.

We’ve had two years of Trump. We’ve watched as the scientists and “the people who knew what they were doing” have been marginalized or pushed out. We’ve watched as key positions in the administration have been abandoned and not replaced and we’ve watched as other positions have been taken up by “barely qualified” loyalists. And the news cycle moves so quickly we never get the chance to think about any of this.

And this is where we are at now. With the controls and the oversight in the hands of under-qualified loyalists: things are falling apart. The job of Pelosi is to “hold the line” until 2020. Its to stop the rot. To do everything that she can to stop things getting worse. Its the job of the American people to vote this corrupt administration out of power at the next election. Then to go about fixing everything that Trump has broken. To put in safeguards to ensure that this sort of nonsense never happens again.

Two years ago I couldn’t imagine that people would be “scared” of Donald Trump. The guy is a buffoon. The guy is the dumbest person in the room. Yet almost nobody on the Republican side dared cross him.

Then I remembered watching this interaction.

And it clicked. These people are fucking stupid. They don’t know what is going on. They don’t know what they are talking about. If they didn’t have their list of pre-generated talking points they are completely and utterly lost. So of course they are scared of Trump. They can’t think for themselves which makes them easy to bully.

And I figured out that its precisely this that makes Pelosi so effective. She’s smarter than them. She can run rings around them. Because they are fucking stupid. They are scared of her in a different way. I didn’t get it before, but I get it now. She gets things done because they aren’t smart enough to figure out when they are getting played.

Long-term pay-go will make it harder to pass a more “liberal agenda.” But now is not the time to play the long game. Things are at a crisis. And the Republicans still hold most of the cards. The Democrats have the House, Pelosi is going to do what needs to be done. I think pay-go is bad policy. But there is a chess game going on right now and I’ve lost every game of chess I’ve ever played, so I’ll defer to the experts for now.

I called her stupid once, but really, she’s not stupid. She is naive, however. And she keep saying things without thinking them through or fact checking them, forgetting that anything she says in public will be dissected now.

Yes, Trump and the GOp are scared shitless of Pelosi.

This just in: Paul Ryan is no longer Speaker of the House. He’s not even in Congress.

It’s the 116th Congress, and the Dems are now in charge of the House!

I think there might be a generational divide, here. Occasio-Cortez is young enough that she can’t forget that, because it’s the only world she’s ever known. It’d be like a fish forgetting water.

And Pelosi has been officially elected Speaker.

Game ON.

No, you have completely mis-read the Pubs if that’s what you think. They aren’t stupid. And they’re not afraid of Trump. They are afraid of their voting base, because many of them were elected in extremely gerry-mandered hard-right districts. Republicans in general are afraid of getting primaried by their base.

They are opportunistic politicians who will break any norm they can to get re-elected and to tilt the playing field in their direction. That’s why they have control of the White House and (until this week) both houses of congress, even with an overall minority of votes. That’s why they pass bills with no debate, and get away with it. The Dem leadership is no smarter than the Pub leadership. I would say that they are more ethical, and more honest (i.e., less dishonest) than the Pubs. They know more about policy. But Pubs know more about amassing power and playing hardball. This isn’t about stupidity. This is about one side trying to govern and another side trying to rip Washington apart.

That link that you provided proves nothing other than the fact that Pubs will go to any lengths to try to snooker the American people into thinking they actually have a healthcare plan, when they actually don’t.

…you are welcome to hold an opinion that is different to mine.
