Speed Dating - anyone done it?

Particularly in NYC or on LI. Some friends and I were thinking about trying it, I’m wondering if anyone else has done this and if it was weird, fun, frustrating, a waste. Oh and any recommendations for ‘good’ ones if you had a successful experience.

A couple of friends of mine got married through a speed dating event in California sponsored by an Orthodox Jewish organization (Aish HaTorah). (I knew them both and almost fixed them up myself) Not sure if speed dating in this context is the exact same thing you’re thinking of though. They would definitely call it a positive experience now, and overall they did say the quality of the event was good.

hmm. i just looked speed dating up, and they claim to only allow ‘professionals’ (i.e., men with money and prestige i guess) in to try it. I find that offensive. thats like a dating seminar that only allowed women with waists under 30" to enter the building.

ah well. to answer the OP, no i haven’t. but i know a few friends who have. they never discussed it again so i guess it was uneventful.

Speed Dating?

Isn’t that what skanky tattooed chicks do at those low life biker bars?

Seems like a lot of pressure. Not only do you have to be witty and interesting once, but two, three, seven, ten times! Uh-uh. No thanks.

I tried it a couple of times. It was OK, but don’t expect that this, any more than any other method of meeting people, is going to be the “magic method” that guarantees you find your One True Love.

The second time I did it was actually better than the first, since they had the women moving around and the men staying put. So I was basically sitting there while a bevy of women (many of them quite attractive) just came around to talk to me. Felt very nice.

Basically, it’s one more method for people in urban environments to get out and meet people that they might not interact with otherwise.

So is it 2 or 3 minutes to chat, or is it 2 or 3 minutes to describe yourself? “Hi, I’m bob, 80 yr used car salesman, into origami and the ancient art of nosepicking with chopsticks.” or “Hi, how you doing”?
