Unless you are referring to the town in the Netherlands, the song by Rammstein, the book by Franz Kafka or the 1987 miniseries staring Kriss Kristofferson, the intentional misspelling with a “k” makes you look like a jakkass.
We get it. You think the USA is some sort of imperialist Evil Empire. You hate kapitalism and korporations.
It’s not klever or kool.
It just makes you look like a left-wing beatnik wierdo using a hakkneyed kliché.
And what does it even mean? It is supposed to be some sort of Sovietifikation of the alphabet? A reference to Carl Marcs?
I suggest in the future, dispense with the stupid, inflamatory rhetorik and stikk to the diskussion.
This is an interesting thread to me. I used to think that spelling America with a K was the dumbest, corniest, silliest shit ever. But two books have swayed me a bit.
The autobiography of Assata Shakur and the God Delusion.
In the God Delusion, Dawkins talks about how it is important to raise consciousness. He talks about how whether or not you agree with feminists and what they believe in, they have invaded our consciousness in such a way that we kind of flinch when someone says “mankind” or something like that. We may not actually flinch, but most of us blink just a bit mentally…because feminists have raised our consciousness about the ideas of there being womankind as well.
While reading Assata’s book, which was basically from the viewpoint of a militant black woman, I was jarred a bit each time she wrote “kourt room” or “Amerika”. But it did cause me to pause just a moment and see it through her eyes. Although her lenses and my own were already pretty similar, I guess.
Steven Biko really did a great job of showing how important it is to affect outlooks and perceptions. If you can raise consciousness for your own viewpoint, you can advance your cause.
ETA: I don’t use that spelling. I can’t be writing like a cornball.
I just can’t get on board with this. I despise this notion that we now have to have all-inclusive language for everyone, at all times. Mankind obviously includes women. Women are equal to men. Do we now have to say “mankind, womankind, childrenkind, unbornkind”, etc?
No. I’m not saying that we have to say ‘womankind’.
Let me try again. I am saying that I used to think it was useless to write ‘Amerika’. Now, I can see what they are trying to do.
I wince just a touch when I hear “one step for mankind” or whatever now. I can’t explain it. I am not offended by it. But I have been ‘nudged’ by very zealous feminists that have pushed hard and tirelessly to get people to be inclusive of women.
I don’t care to call mankind ‘womanandmankind’ or whatever. But I can see what they were trying to do when they waged a war on words like ‘mankind’.
Nzinga, that makes sense. It’s less about telling people what they should say and more about making them think twice about things they might ordinarly take for granted.
I think the OP might have started this thread because of this post in this thread.
…and I agree with Tomndebb in his post that I linked. Theres no reason to use a “K” in America except to deliberately troll. Sure, you might feel that way for real…but outside of the pit, theres no reason to do it unless you want to spark a reaction from others here. Thats normal for a message board but if you’re actually seeking a debate or varied opinions its kind of stupid to outright insult a chunk of the folks you’re talking to.
But what purpose does calling America “Amerikka” serve for the feminist movement, which has pretty much achieved all it’s goals?
I’m with the OP, America is a lot of things good and bad, but adding the extra k’s doesn’t solve anything, nor does it prove a point. We get it, “Amerikkka” typers, you hate America and think it needs improvement. Well, I agree, it does, but typing in those extra K’s doesn’t prove nor resolve anything. It just makes you look like you think that America is run by the KKK or something. It’s ignorant.
Yeah, Freudian, I think that is the idea. I mean, not that it has to work on us. If we can stand the onslaught of very vigorous pc police, hey great. But ususally, we can’t resist, and eventually, we do learn to wince a mite at something like ‘mankind’. Then they have ‘won’ a tiny battle.
I use the word nigger (nigga) all the time. When blacks first started using it as a term of endearment (we have probably always used it in the more hateful sense) it was probably an attempt to raise the consciousness of the black youth in such a way that there are people out there that would love to hurt us with words, but we will be defiant. Of course that word used to cut deep…lots of blacks had seen their mom or dad or sister or brother or themselves have the word hurled at them hatefully by someone with power to hurt them in more ways than mere words.
But they used the word as a term of endearment nevertheless, and now it is to the point that when I get called a nigger on the phone at work it gives me a case of the giggles.
Those who spell America with a ‘K’ are invariably the types who cry and whine about ‘oppression’ when they’ve never been in a truly oppressive country. They never have a clue. They’ll say they’ve talked with folks from such countries, but they are invariably chatting with the government’s reps or approved speakers from that nation.
In other words, jackasses, and spoiled jackasses to boot.
