You commit a crime and the judge gives you this choice.
In the Turkih prison the living conditions will be horrible, the food will be barely enough to keep you alive, guards and other inmates will beat you occasionally, but all this will be over after 2 years.
In the Norwegian prison you will have your own small but clean and nicely decorated cell, access to gym, computers and library and plenty of good quality food. Yet you ll have to spend 20 years there. If you are over a certain age that might be more than your remaining life expectancy.
While reading up on Norwegian prisons when the crime was bigger news I noticed that it was a lot better than the living standards many people here have. Plus reliable health care? Jesus.
However in the Norwegian prison I wouldn’t have family near me. That would suck.
But if the counseling was good in the Norwegian prison, I’d pick the Norwegian one.
I picked the Turkish prison, and it was a no-brainer decision. Maybe its just me, but I think people are seriously underestimating how horrible it will be to be trapped in a prison for 20 years even if the floors are clean and the food edible. I would feel the same way about my own apartment, and I like my apartment! It is not just the cabin fever that would get me down, it is the opportunity cost. Career plans and satisfaction, jumping in the car and going for a hike, larger travel plans, all of it gone. I’m sure the Turkish prison would be awful, and I cannot imagine how horrible the first few weeks would be, but I think people are able to acclimatize to a new normal pretty easily. I suspect that will happen, and in 2 years I’d get my life back (well, the life of a convicted felon back, but I’ve chosen to disregard that part for this hypothetical).
Very difficult choice. I’m a wuss about pain, and that would really suck. On the other hand, taking me away from my daughter as she grows up in nigh-unbearable. I initially chose the 20-year sentence, but now that I think about my daughter, I’d have to go with the 2-year one.
I would rather lose 2 years of my life rather than 20. Being constrained irritates the P out of me so I chose the shorter time, no matter the conditions.
Okay, this is my new retirement plan. I’ve been researching how to immigrate to a different country (harder than it sounds except for Russia). My new plan is to get a ticket to Norway and do the least offensive crime that I can find that will cause me to be imprisoned there.
So, where can I find out what the penalties are for various crimes in Norway? Do they have an extradition agreement with the US? (It would sure suck to end up a guest of Haliburton!)
I could stand to lose some weight, and who knows maybe the beatings will toughen me up, but I gotta ask one thing. Does anyone drop the soap in Turkish prisons, because to me rape really is a sticking point.
