Spend Valentine's Day with....Peter Pan???

I just had to say something about the new ad for “Finding Neverland”.

And what I have to say is this: “Finding Neverland” is not a love story.

Well, not in the Valentine’s Day sense.

And yet they are calling it the perfect Valentine’s Day movie and have it billed as a “romance”. And for some reason, have “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” playing over it.

It is not a love story.

There is no evidence of a romantic relationship between J.M. Barrie and Sylvia Llewelyn Davies. Not that that matters. We’re talking about the movie not reaity. And the movie departed from reality in countless ways. But one way it stuck to the truth is showing James’ and Sylvia’s relationship as being essential platonic and familial.

Finally we get a movie that has a less cliched take on male and female relationships (ie, they don’t “fall in love” at the end. Even if they do love each other), and for that matter a movie that is about a lot more than that…and then we get ads that have nothing to do with the movie.

What? They didn’t think it could stand on just those Osacr nominations???

Not saying I don’t understand why they’d run those ads. Just saying I’m irritated by them.

And yes, I think everyone should go see “Finding Neverland”. Great movie. Deserves better ads.

But…but…but look at how they stare at each other all moony and with repressed Victorian longing! Can’t you read between the bleedin’ lines?

Too bad the rest of the film is a bumper crop of cliches.

So that’s one vote “Yay” and one vote “Meh.”
