Spider Khan, Spider Khan...

Yep, the Indians are showing they can do whatever Marvel can. Check it out, then come back to me with your tales of boggle.

That’s pretty cool, actually. I’d love to see this over here. The costume is terribly ginchy.

Gotham Comics press release about Spiderman India - the BBC seems to have used it mostly intact, but there’s more images, including some of Rakshasa. And, HEY! It mentions Marvel having (nonspecific) plans to release it over here.

This is really cool, I’d like to read this myself to see how they do it. I hope it doesn’t come off as trite, though. I’m sure I would find it interesting, so hopefully the people it’s directed to will, also.

I’m curious as to what changes they’ll make as to his origin. Think it will still be a radioactive spider bite, or something else? The fact his main nemesis seems to be a demon gives me the impression it’s going to be more a supernatural origin than a scientific one.

Wow! Very cool.
Maybe next they could do the Fantastic Four…

Not especially big news…
They’ve done it before in Japan. Both as a manga starring a young japanese boy, and as a live action TV show.

Interestingly, the Spiderman live action (sentai) show was the first to have the hero fight the villian, then the villian grow very large, and have Spiderman fight him in a robot.

I just want to see a Spider-Man Bollywood musical come from this!

Given the quantity of regional mythology that we Westerners appropriate and recycle as ours, I’m not at all surprised that someone is doing it right back at us. I’m not sure what’s boggling you, Evil Death. It looks as though his origin will be relatively unchanged, just modified to fit local custom, and some changes to his outfit.

I’ll be boggled at a Scottish, kilt-wearing Spiderman, though. I’ll give you that.

I’ll admit, it is the Spider-Dhoti that’s boggling me. They even put the uniform pattern on it!

I’m trying to imagine Batman done Indian-style now.

“What can we do, Bhajiman?”

“Don’t worry, Rupeen - I can get us out of this, iff I can just … reach … my utility dhoti!”

I see the American Spider-Man swinging to the unemployment office. “Damn outsourcing…”

I like the idea, though IMO the top half of Spidey’s costume could use a bit more work to distinguish it from the “original.”

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bir… JESUS! Put some pants on, you freak! I got children down here!

Interesting that the company that’s going to be working on this is called “Gotham.”

From the BBC news article:

[quote]
“Unlike traditional translations of American comics, Spider-Man India will become the first-ever ‘transcreation’, where we reinvent the origin of a Western property.”

Does that mean he gets his powers from being bitten by a radioactive Sacred Cow?

I don’t know enough about Indian culture to fully appreciate this, but it seems like a clever idea. And I like the new costume… It still looks like Spider-man, but with appropriate regional touches.

I’m wondering if Rakshasa IS actually a Rakshasa or if he’s just taken the name. He’s supposed to be the Indian equivelant to Green Goblin (and he is clearly based on the Ultimate GG), who isn’t really a Goblin, but they might be going for more supernatural elements than the sciencefictiony stuff that led to US Spidie and GG.

His head in that second picture is gigantic.

I have to credit the author here… I never thought I’d see a loincloth described as “modest.”

Well, thinking of modesty, Peter Parker’s outfit reminds me of the garments speedskaters wear at the Winter Olympics. Sure, everything is covered, but they look like they are sprayed on. As I once heard someone say “They are so tight you can tell what religion a guy is by looking at him.”

That’s what happens when you try wearing your turban under the mask…

particularly if he did it in the traditional fashion.

[just imagine]

innocent bystander looks up at be-kilted spiderman swinging overhead, a healthy breeze around the unmentionables.

“My Eyes My Eyes Arrrgh”

Peter McParker would have to sell his shots to a porn mag rather than the Glaswegian Herald
