Spies of Warsaw - David Tennant

The first two hours was on BBCAmerica Wed night. It finishes next Wed. I’m sure there will be several repeats if you missed the premiere.

I decided to watch because of David Tennant. It was a bit slow paced but I got drawn into the story. It’s especially tragic because the setting isn’t too long before Germany invades Poland on Sep 1, 1939. I found it interesting that the character tried so hard to warn his superiors in France and also warn England. These characters are oblivious to the terrors of the blitzkrieg that will soon come.

I bought the Kindle book by Alan Furst last night. I wanted to read the original story and see what got left out.

I taped it and watched about half and got sleepy. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of it. I’ve never seen Dr. Who, so that didn’t influence me.

I was influenced by the review you quoted.

Its okay. The last 1/3rd are a big improvement in quality and view ability.

It does sadden you to realise that even money the real life equivalents of all the characters would probably not live to see 1945.

So far the book is really good. The miniseries followed it pretty close. The book has some more details about the plot. It explained a few things that weren’t clear in the miniseries.

I saw an interview where David said he played the role straight. He didn’t have the attitude and cockiness of the Doctor. I think he may have gone a little too far in playing the role so flat. The leading man is supposed to be a little cocky. Not like the doctor, but he should clearly have some passion for whatever is happening.

I’m just a few chapters away from where part 1 of the miniseries ended. I need to decide if I’ll stop reading and wait for part 2 to air next week. I may just finish the book. I’m not good at waiting.

Thanks for the info, but yes, he seemed to be sleepwalking. I couldn’t finish it.

It does make you wonder how any spying got done before computers, cell phones, satellites, GPS, and other techie paraphernalia. Somehow they still managed to have wars. :frowning:

His character is a bit wooden, and frankly, I’m having a hard time telling the different characters apart. But I’m really enjoying the cars.

Anyone know where they filmed the urban scenes?

I just finished up the first half. In some ways spying would have been easier back then…example, jumping in a small plane and flying across a border.

Did anyone up above ever finish the mini-series?

I recorded the 2nd half. Plan to watch it this weekend.

The pace should pick up as they get closer to war. At least I hope so.

I watched the rest of it. It was okay. I mostly liked the setting/background, etc. It wasn’t riveting. I sometimes had a hard time keeping the characters straight. The hero was pretty buttoned-down. It was comical that he was supposed to be French.

Fell asleep in the first half. So we skipped the second installment. Seems like a good story, but the acting was just too wooden.

If you are Tennant fans wait for Broadchurch (bought by BBC America, dates not confirmed yet).

Completely bloody outstanding (it’s a 380 mintes drama in 8 parts).
