Spirituality and Stargate

So, I’ll preface this by saying that after, say, season 3, I’ve seen maybe half-a-dozen episodes. I’m wondering- is spirituality of Earth ever adressed? I know the Jaffa followed the ‘false deities’. I know apparently 99% of the deific figures of earth were really ga’ould or asgard. So… Is current religion ever adressed? I’d expect it would be mighty difficult for anyone ‘in the know’ about the history of the stargate to have any type of real religious belief.

The answer to your question is basically no.

However, the latest season has introduced some new bad guys and issues that could seen as a little more relevant to modern religions, or really religion in general. But they still haven’t addressed any actual current religions.

Along the same lines, am I the only one who feels that SG-1 is in danger of being kinda preachy? The Ori/Priors stuff is ok, but one more lecture by Daniel about how all religions are equal might just make me … I don’t know … do something. Most of the episodes this season felt more like a theology class than a sci-fi action show, and I worry that it will be the continued tone.

Actually, medieval Christians appeared in the episode Demons.

I think the writing is good… they are trying to push the boundaries and do stuff that hasn’t been seen before. The Ori make good villains. I think what’s missing is the chemistry. It took the cast several seasons to develop their easy rapport, and when Richard Dean Anderson left and Ben Browder arrived, it kind of messed things up. I enjoyed the scenes with Claudia Black and wish she stuck around for more. But Ben Browder has yet to impress me as the squad leader.

They haven’t given Ben much to work with yet - there was so much focus in the first six episodes on Vala and Daniel that he kind of got pushed to the background. As far as the religion, I’m a little tired of Daniel’s preaching, too, but I figure that’s just Daniel.

And regarding Claudia Black (spoiler for second half of the season):

She’s coming back in the final episode of the season, with plans for her to stick around next season. Not sure if that means they’ll make her a cast member or what, but at least we get her for a few more episodes
