Stargate SG-1 & Atlantis returned last night [spoilers]

We’re on episode 11 of each show. Who watched? Show of hands. C’mon, there’s a Painkiller Jane thread, some of had to have watched the Stargates.

Is no one else happy it’s back on? We’re counting down the last ten eps of SG-1, but I think Atlantis has been renewed for a forth season.

Do you know there are (tentatively) two Stargate TV movies planned for this fall?

If Adria is such a bad-ass, why didn’t she take out the dragon?

Think Ba’al is okay? I don’t think we’ve seen the last of him, and he may even have something to do with Daniel’s eventual escape from Adria.

Yea, I saw it was on when I was flipping last night. But then I’ve already seen the last half of the seasons of SG-1 and Atlantis. There are some really good episodes of SG1 comming up, you’ll deffinatlly enjoy the season.

Yeah, I know the rest of the season already aired in the UK. I’ve been resisting the temptation to peak, but don’t know how long I can hold out.

If no one wants to talk about the show with me…

Adria didn’t have her powers at that point. The only thing she had was her technological equipment, like her shield.

That Ba’al is dead. But I believe there are still many clones running around.

Well, Adria’s powers were nullified inside the chamber, but I think they worked outside it. But thinking about it more I guess it still makes sense she wouldn’t bother trying to defeat the dragon since the point was to figure out the dragon’s name, or at least the name which would deactivate it.

That Ba’al is dead? I thought that Ba’al was the real Ba’al who previously had enlisted SG-1’s aid in trying to round up his naughty clones turned against him?

Did you forget the rest of that episode where all the Ba’als escaped from SGC together after getting the address information from Sam? It was all a set up by the Ba’als to get the info.

I liked both the season openers. I’m pretty sad about SG-1 ending in another 9 episodes, as I’m not that fond of the Atlantis show. It’s ok, but not nearly as good as SG-1 in my opinion. I liked the mis-information that they gave the captives in Atlantis…that showed some nice writting and thinking. Much better than using the guy that had been floating in space for a couple of months.

I am curiouse how they’re going to wrap up SG-1 in only 9 episode with so much left to do. I hope that it doesn’t all feel rushed to a conclusion.

That was just Ba’als plot to get a lot oh himselves into the SGC and was a key to his getting out as well.

Oh and I’m watching.

SG-1 has gone downhill without RDA. He was the show’s anchor in so many ways, and now that he’s gone it just isn’t the same. All the same, I will be sad to see the show go, though it will hopefully be a good resolution. I was kinda dissapointed at yet another “We’ve found the weapon/solution/etc – oops, no we didn’t” episode again. I want to see the ancients stop being such dipshits. I want to see the furlings, or those wacky druid people, or someone with some technological advancement come in and help out. I was dismayed that the Asgard were so completely useless.

Atlantis, while entertaining, has never really held the same appeal as SG-1. I’ve been watching simply because it holds my interest as a stand-in, but I long for the early days of SG-1, before all alien technology was USB compatible.

Yeah, I was kinda ticked that RDA basically left the series…that sucked. I think they did the best they could faced with the fact that he pretty much quit. The first couple of episodes with the new guy were really bad, but after that it picked up. The core team is still there. I think the show can survive with a replacement for one character…(ex. when Michael Shanks left), but if they lost two of the original members it wouldn’t have been able to recover.

I said this in the painkiller jane thread, but I think Stargate:SG-1 is one of the longest running science fiction shows on TV. The only other one I can find is Dr. Who…which does beat it by a fair margin. But I’m not sure it counts the same way.

Well, I can’t hold it against RDA. He is getting old. He really can’t believably play a Lt Colonel who goes out on adventures every day anymore, and relgating him to a manager (sorry, General) role didn’t really do him justice. Did you see him on SG-A this week? It was bad enough in SG-1 when they had to use camera tricks for him to win a fight…I just wish they could have found a better replacement.

The fact that the story arc is being rushed to a premature conclusion is the biggest reason for the two specials which are airing later this year. They were greenlighted in response to the fact that the SG-1 story needed more closure than Season 10 will have. I can already feel the foreboding absence of a great show looming in the not-very-distant future, and it’s depressing. I find a lot of the criticisms of the cast shift last season unfair. I like Ben Browder and I love Claudia Black, and not just because I identify them with Farscape (which I didn’t watch). Beau Bridges seems to have a bit of theatric bravado and he’s a bit hard to take seriously since he usually plays lighthearted characters, but they have really found a chemistry within a very short period of time.

And don’t forget … a third series, Stargate Universe, is in production. Only info that’s been revealed is that it revolves around the signifigance of the ninth chevron within the gate network. Gate addresses only use seven, with the eigth representing a figure of distance. The ninth chevron has never been “locked and encoded”, as it were. It hasn’t yet been revealed what the ninth chevron does, but I think we’ll find out before SG-1 is over. I doubt the new show will stray much from the formula of the current shows, but the producers have let it be known it will be less a spin-off like Atlantis, and will be able to stand on its own to carry the franchise. A large part of Stargate’s success has been that it takes place in the present day and not the distant future, so I doubt the timeline will change … but as the name suggests, I believe the scope of the, ahem, “Stargate universe” is about to get a lot bigger.

I actually hadn’t heard anything about that series anamnesis, so thanks for giving me a heads up. I am glad that they’re going to try and give a bit more closure to the series, it’s been on the top of my list for years now. I own every season that is out on DVD. For the most part I don’t mind the cast change…as I said, if they keep at least three of the original cast members I think it works. And as crazyjoe pointed out, it logically made sense within the framework of the show that RDA pretty much had to be replaced. And the way they did it even made sense within the show. The only glitch I saw was that it made more sense for Samatha Carter to have been put in charge of the team, than the new guy. She had the rank, and experience…even though she originally was more of a scientist than a soldier. I think after 8 years of fighting aliens shes earned her place as someone with combat experience.

I’m hoping it ends with Daniel dying for the third and last time!!

I hadn’t heard of a new series either. If it keeps some of the feel of SG-1 it will be a welcome addition. What was really sad about the cancellation of SG-1 is the fact they have set up a series ending season ever since season 7, but it kept going. This year they didn’t set it up to end, so the series was cancelled. :stuck_out_tongue:

I like the addition of Browder and Black. They started kind of rough, but things really came together once the original 3 were all back on the team.

Atrael, I don’t think it is really so much that Mitchell is in charge of the team. As he said to Landry, he and Carter are the same rank, Teal’c is an alien, and Daniel is a civilian. It is much more of a partnership than a military team with a chain of command.

You bastard! Daniel is Stargate.

Now see, if they’d have taken Shanks out at the end of Season 9, I’d have been much more disappointed than I was with Anderson’s departure. It felt right for O’Neill to take leave. I’d have still watched if Daniel was gone, but he is my favorite character and will be hugely missed. They’re all valuable characters, but really, O’Neill was just the comic relief and not a plot-centric character.

I should also add for those out of the Stargate loop that we’re bound to see quite a bit of SG-1/Atlantis crossover since I know for a fact that Tapping’s contract entitled her to more episodes as part of the franchise, so we’ll be seeing her on Atlantis more than once in the future.

I remember all the Ba’als using their combined beam transporter lock-on thingies to beam out of the SGC after having stolen some intel about the Ancient Ori-defeating device, but that’s it. I don’t remember where the real Ba’al was. But this Ba’al and Carter had that snarky chemistry going on which would be a waste if that weren’t the real Ba’al.

Dr. Who holds the record as long as you don’t mind them changing the character all the time, but SG-1 holds the world record for consecutive episodes. At the end of the series I think they’ll be at 214 eps, a tough record to beat.

I’m also completely okay with RDA’s departure, and the latest SGA convinced me he really is pretty much done. That belly he’s grown was hard to disguise. Browder & Black have fit in just fine, IMO.

That’s really interesting about Stargate Universe. I hadn’t heard anything about it, but the producers of the show have said they’re determined to keep the Stargate franchise alive and well for as long as they can, and I’m glad.

Ninth chevron? What in the heck could that be? I thought the eighth chevron was like a “country code” which took you to another galaxy assuming you could power the gate. A ninth chevron? The mind boggles at what they’ve got up their sleeve, but I hope they don’t come up with a new enemy which is even more powerful than the last. Seriously, the Asgard used to be the baddest-asses around and now they’re wimps. I would like to see them duke it out with the Wraith, but apparently they can’t do much of anything against the Ori.

What are the Asgard up to these days anyway? Seems like there’s still a lot of high powered help available to humans they aren’t taking advantage of.

My guess: time travel.

What happens with the Asgard is explained in episode 20… The last one. It was even a believable explaination to me.

It seemed to me that the Asguard are still recovering from a metric ton of ass-kicking by those damned replicators. I think they’ve had to rebuild their civilzation a bunch of times now, and also there was some mention of their need to focus on their clonig process, since it was slowly failing them. Their population is not very sizeable, and they seem to be dedicating all of their resources elsewhere, with the exception of the one asguard guy who was helping in the Ori battle and the one guy they have on board the Daudelus who runs the hyperdrive (they don’t have an Asguard running the drive on each and every X303, do they?)

Anyhow, that the Asguard have not helped out is understandable, but what about the furlings (dammit if we go through the whole series without ever meeting the furlings, it’s gonna suck)? What about those wacky druid guys (the ones with Quark from DS9) who were way technologically advanced but buried their Stargate? The Tollen got wiped out so they’re no help, and the To’Kra are probably hiding underground somehwere, hoping like hell that no one finds them till it’s all over.
