I’m no great follower of the game, but I’m really enjoying the tournament and England’s progress. However, I just do not know what Heskey has done to deserve selection. Yes, today he got a goal. Beckham passed and he was in the right place at the right time to have a tap. He had the whole goal area to choose from, aimed it straight at the keeper and thankfully the keeper let it slip under his left leg.
Other than that, he hasn’t shown any abilities at all, from what I can see. Hasn’t made any play, can’t pass any better than Stevie Wonder and - today’s glorious fuke aside - can’t seem to aim on target. He also seems a bit lardy, not very fast. It’s baffling. At club level is he much more impressive?
Buy WTF, THREE NIL !!! I found it almost as much fun as the Euro 96 clash where we comprehensively stuffed Holland.
Maybe I should ask this over in ‘FIFA World Cup for dummies’ but do we really have a chance against Brazil (assuiming Brazil beat Belgium)?
Now let me see. Beckham hit the corner that landed perfectly at the far post for Ferdinand. Beckham made the perfect pass for Heskey to put in the net. I haven’t seen much of the rest of the game besides that, since I was forced to work this morning, and just got off, but I did see those sequences. I also saw his presence in support of Mills on a few occaisions early.
Why the hell do people put him down, still? What the hell more do you want from your right midfielder??? Geesh, if you like, we’ll trade ya Ernie Stewart for him, or better yet, we’ll send ya Cobi Jones.
I’m off now to watch the rest of the game, which I taped from Univision, thanks to the Disney Co.'s stupid decision to show it only on tape delay. I hope their rating sucked at 3:30, though I suppose that would just make the powers that be assert that soccer can’t have a following in the US, and shouldn’t be on TV at all. Logical bastards they are.
And to England, a thousand congrats for a job VERY well done!!!
Have fun against Brazil.
If Beckham hit two good balls, just think how anonymous he must’ve been the rest of the game.
I don’t normally slate a player, especially when they were outstanding in qualifying, but Beckham’s form has been patchy since returning from injury. His strength is his crossing, which he didn’t get much of a chance to do today, so I ended up seeing the very average nature of the rest of his play. He shouldn’t be consistently covering for Mills (Mills had a fine game) if he doesn’t have the pace to do his own job on the break.
PS Beckham’s pass for the Heskey goal was good, but I think the Danish defender would have cleared it easily if it hadn’t taken an unfortunate bounce off him.
