Seventy-eight minutes gone and Ireland are still 1-0 down to an early Fernando Morientes goal.
It’s been fairly even, IMHO. Spain are playing a patient counter-attacking game, but seem unwilling to use the flanks and like to dally a bit much on the ball. Morientes and Raul are also seemingly unaware of the offside concept. Ireland are playing a magnificent pressing game; every time a Spanish player receives the ball three or four Irish players home in on him.
If it wasn’t for a sharp-eyed (correctly so) linesman Ireland could be four down, and if it wasn’t for Iker Casillas and some woeful finishing Ireland could have potted at least a couple. Duff is a wonderful player; unfortunately the same cannot be said for Kilbane on today’s showing.
I’m telling you… Irelands fans are going to storm the field and kick in the goal themselves anytime now. I know its going to happen!

according to the gamecast there was a missed penalty by Ireland earlier. but I can’t seem to find it in the running commentary. What was the deal with that?
Well, Ireland’s first penalty was a blatant dive - Good save from the Spanish 'keeper. Second penalty was deserved though.
Yep, there was. Second-half, foul in the area by Sanjuan on Duff. Harte hit it almost straight at Casillas, who pushed it out as far as Kilbane. His shot screwed away to the left, and as the BBC commentator noted that miss was worse than the penalty itself.
Kat - I think ‘dive’ is a bit harsh. Sanjuan mistimed the tackle and Duff’s trailing foot caught Sanjuan’s leg as he went past. I think he may have exaggerated it slightly, but Sanjuan did look like he made contact.

Ireland have been the better in extra time so far.
Looks like that last minute penalty and goal have demoralised the Spaniards.
The Irish seem to have more endurance and their width is stretching Spain whose legs are going.
Agreed, the Spanish are sitting back and looking tired while the Irish are really going for it.
