Halftime. 0-0. Play seems about even. Spain shows a bit more skill, but I am not going to count out Korea’s conditioning and speed. C’mon people I can’t be the only one watching this.
update, Spain just had a goal called back because of a holding foul, but they came out stronger than Korea in the second half. We’ll see how it goes.
I heard the Korean Fans chanting. All 67,000(?) of them singing/chanting in unison. It’s pretty cool! I love world cup soccer, so exciting. So many awesome goalie saves.
I particularly love the (is there a term for these) the almost movie like goal-shots in which 2-3 defenders dive for the kicked ball and all miss, in slow motion the ball wheels inexplicably toward the goal, the goalie makes a while flailing leap, knicks the ball with a finger, and the ball misses. Fantastic.
I have a question. Is Joaquin THAT good? I don’t remember even noticing him in the game against Ireland, But in this match he’s going around defenders like they’re standing still. Quite an impressive performance.
We’re now waiting for a golden goal.
God I hate it when you just KNOW the match is going to finish while the SDMB is down for maintenance.
O freakin’ T. I like the Spaniards, but this is how the Koreans beat Italy. If they pull this off, I don’t think they’ll just build Hidink a stautue - I think they’ll saint that Dutchman.
Woohooo!!!
Korea’s through on a penalty shootout!!!
Oh crap. Any team I support goes out.
Penalties are a terrible way to go out of a world cup.
I feel for Joaquin. He was Spain’s best player… And he’s just 20 too. Wonder what he’s going through at the moment.
Good luck Korea. Beat those Germans please.
Oh, and 5-HT, Joaquin didn’t play against Ireland. He is that good. Probably the most talented youngster Spain have at the moment. The only reason he didn’t play is lack of experience. He’ll be a regular in Euro 2004.
Just needs to work on those penalties.
Spain was very unlucky to miss the golden goal during extra time.
Sadly, I suspect Senegal will be able to repeat Korea’s effort, but at least none of us can say this has been a boring and predictable series.
I feel for Joaquin too, but imagine how good he’ll be with 4 more year’s experience under his belt.
Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a true **World[/d] Cup rather than a Europe / South America tournament. One team from Asia, one team from South America, one team from Western Europe, and the last team to be decided between South-Eastern Europe/Mid East and Africa. Nothing against the Turks, but go Senegal.
Two Spanish goals disallowed in the ninety minutes.
One perfectly good Spanish golden goal disallowed in the extra time. Supposedly the ball went out. It didn’t, as replays clearly show. The assistant ref was in a place to see this clearly - yet he didn’t raise his flag until the ball went into the net…
Officials being very chummy with Hiddink and the Korean players, rather frosty with the Spanish staff.
Obviously I don’t know all the facts, but I don’t like the look of it. Perhaps it really is just a conincidence, just like the disallowed goal in the Italian game, but right now I have a very nasty taste in my mouth.
you think it might be rigged ** Tansu**?
I’m ashamed to say I’m rather happy. Just cause Hiddink is Dutch, ofcourse. I need to have *something * to be happy with.
hmmm. I thought those calls were fair, obvious even.
If you see a replay from another angle, it’s so obvious the ball didn’t even nearly go out it’s incredible. That linesman was an absolute fucking disgrace. He was either so incompetent that he didn’t realise he had to keep up with the play, so blind that he couldn’t tell that the ball was easily still in…or something highly irregular went on here. Why did his flag only go up once the ball was in the box rather than when it supposedly went out?
If anything will get video brought in, I’d guess it would be the whiff of foul play at this level. It’s unthinkable…isn’t it ?
Me happy that Spain were knocked out on Peno’s? Nah, I’m over the moon about it
Korea for the World Cup.
OK, yeah, I remember. That ball did not go out of bounds The reason I forgot is because it would not have mattered. The ref blew his whistle and the Koreans stopped playing. The Spanish kicked it in anyway. No whistle and the Koreans would have played defense. It was a bad call, but all it meant was a change of possession.
Actually, the Korean defender still went up and Lee wouldn’t have had a shot if he had gone for the ball, I forget if he did, on the Spanish header in. I don’t totally disagree with the call against Totti in the Korean Round of 16 game–Italy brings the suspicion upon itself because it dives so often, if that’s the way they want to play they have to live with the consequences, but that call was flagrantly stupid.
Hmmmm, the replay in super slow motion I saw shows the following on the phantom ball out of play situation:
-
The assisstant did not make it to the goal line until after the ball was already passed into the box; and
-
The flag was on its way up as soon as he did reach the goal line.
This means that:
a) He blew the call because he was out of position (he’s supposed to be at the goal line with the play, which was not advancing at such a rapid rate as to have outrun him, and
b) he waited to raise his flag until he reached a point where he thought he had perspective on the position of the ball compared to the line.
As a long-time referee and linesman, I can assure you that you don’t always manage to snap the flag up quite as quickly as you might have liked…
