Brett Hull is being honored tonight here in St. Louis by having his number retired by the Blues. His father, Bobby Hull, also had his number retired by the Chicago Black Hawks. Are there any other father-son combination with retired numbers in any sport?
Not father-son, but does brother-brother count?
Both the numbers of Maurice Richard (9) and his brother Henri Richard (16) have been retired by the Montreal Canadiens, according to the Canadiens’ web site.
Not in Major League Baseball.
The only people with the same last names (yes, I know it’s possible for relations to have different last names) who have had numbers retired are:
Reese (Pee Wee & Jimmy) - not related
Robinson (Brooks, Frank and Jackie) - not related to each other
Williams (Billy and Ted) - not related to each other.
Zev Steinhardt
Griffey sr and jr, when jr retires.
When Barry Bonds retires papa Bobby was a star.
Does daddy Ripken reside in the hall.(manager) too
The question is about retired numbers, not the Hall of Fame (as your last post suggests). In any case, neither Ken Griffey Sr, nor Bobby Bonds, nor Cal Ripken Sr have their numbers retired or are in the Hall of Fame. Given that Ripken Sr’s managing record was 68-101, it is highly unlikely he would ever be a candidate for either.
I know I was just speculating due to the lack of posts drawn.
That’s really not a good reason to post a completely erroneous answer in GQ, when the status of those individuals regarding retired numbers or the Hall of Fame could have been checked on Google within a minute or two.
There have been lots of father-son sports combos, but none yet in which BOTH father and son were great enough to have their numbers retired. Barry Bonds is a superstar- his dad was just a very good ballplayer. Same with Ken Griffey Jr. and his dad.
The only case where I can foresee a father and son having their numbers retired is this: Peyton Manning will almost certainly have his number retired by the Colts, and it’s CONCEIVABLE (not probable, just possible) that the Saints will retire Archie’s number some day.
Well, Foster Hewitt and his father William have both been inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builders category.
Dick Irvin and Dick Irvine Jr are also both inducted in the HHOF.
I can’t find any other hockey father-son player combinations like the Hulls, though.
