Spotify removing explicit songs?

I noticed this the other day with one of the albums I have on my playlist. Tenacious D’s “Pick of Destiny” songs had all been swapped out with clean versions. A search did not seem to give me the option to use the explicit versions.

Then, today, I noticed another song I was listening to seemed to fade at an “opportune” moment, then come back. A very quick Google search revealed that someone else had noticed this and started a Facebook group about it (and also specifically mentioned Tenacious D). But I didn’t see (again, in a very quick search) any massive news story about it.

Is anyone familiar with whether Spotify is doing some wholesale change to songs with explicit lyrics? And if so, why? I don’t really understand the benefit to them. And it certainly pisses me off.

Haven’t bumped this since last year, so I figured it was worth a shot.

I believe the artists and their management work with Spotify to determine which songs will appear. I was listening to plenty of explicit music just yesterday.

This is likely not your issue, but I’ve noticed that sometimes Spotify will swap songs out from your personal library if you have them there, if the artist name and song title match. For example, swapping in a live version of a song I had in iTunes for the album version.
