spotted at newstand: Mental Floss magazine - Where Knowledge Junkies Get their Fix!

Geez, talk about a hard sell. Tone it down, guys, you’re trying too hard.

I subscribe to this little gem. It’s so nice to learn about so many different things and to have fun doing it.

::drops unsubtle hints about wanting the books::

I’ve picked it up a few times and have considered subscribing to it. It’s full of interesting bits of trivia, aka ideal for Dopers!

Guess the hard sell works. Shows what I know about marketing.

Hard sell? What hard sell? I found a copy of the local library, checked it out and read it. Some time later, I stopped by a newsstand before going on a trip and picked it up because it looked like fun reading. If I recall, it was the picture of Einstein on the cover which led me to take a second look at it at the library. It beats the heck out of most women’s magazines!

The harsh imagery of the title; the drawn out, plainly stated subtitle, and the boastful slogan ("::feel smart again::") all iterate thrice, “THIS MAGAZINE IS FOR SMART PEOPLE!” I don’t know, the whole presentation seemed force, as far as magazines go. Imagine a fashion magazine called “Head Turner” with the subtitle, “Where Fashion Junkies Get Their Fix” and the subtitle “look good again”. Wouldn’t that seem corny next to “Vogue”?

eh, change “force” to “forced” and the second “subtitle” to “slogan”.

Oh, I don’t know – I mean, look at the motto of this website.
