Spring cleaning – a tidying swap-meet MMP

When you go to the hairdresser’s, you probably swagger in and pronounce “Prepare to Dye!” :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey. Hey. HEY! This is my natural color, you!

Want a peanut?

You owe me a new laptop! Diet Pepsi does not taste nice when it comes out your nose!

I got my new car. Pics sometime soon when I can be bothered to drag the camera down off the shelf and wander outside to take one!

Blurf.

I don’t want to be at work today. Actually, scratch that… I don’t want to be at work at all. Ever. Why can’t an obscure and distant and obscenely rich relative have the courtesy to die and bequeath everything to me? Sigh.

I’ll second that blurf, Muppet. And the inheritance, thing too!

So my Dad has decided that he wants to buy me a new refrigerator. W00t! I’ll be getting a brand that my company offers a discount on, plus a rebate. Plus - the state of Texas has been granted federal funds that will allow me to get a rebate on Energy Star appliances purchased at a certain time in April.

See this link to see if your state has the same kind of deal.

Happy birfday, boofae!!! Sounds like fun was had by all.

I’ve just spent the last hour messing with my printer that keeps saying there’s an error. At least I was able to print out all my saved e-mail acknowledgements for my Unemployment meeting on Monday. It’s nice to have a copier/scanner/printer but I wish it wasn’t so durn frustrating. Grrrr!

muppet, I am of an age where all my possible sources of inheritance have crossed the great divide. Now I are it.

rigs, I heard the cranes this morning, too. Ours are permanent residents though and bold as brass. Not the least bit afraid of people.

Should I go sit in the sun and wait until tomorrow to clean out my pantry??

Decisions, decisions.

Tupug

Happy Birthday, BooFae!!

I don’t generally watch RR but I really do like her recipes. They’re faster than most of the “real” Food Network chefs: I can’t cook like Emeril on a week night. And many of her recipes have a lot of veggies in the main dish. I like getting the veggies in without having to plan a second item with some sort of interesting veggies. And most of the recipes we’ve tried are really good. KT’s not a RR fan, but he’s had to admit that the results are very good. We’ve added a quasi-Thai chicken stir fry to our list of regulars 'cause it’s just so good. And there’s a Thai chicken pizza that’s fantastic and loaded with veggies. And a blackened chicken pizza that’s one of KT’s favorites. And the pumpkin sausage penne is out of this world. (OK so it has cream in it, but aside from that it’s mostly healthy.) And those mozzarella-stuffed sausage meatballs that I mentioned last week. And a salmon dish with cucumber salsa on top that’s just about the only way I’ll eat salmon. And the tarragon dijon polenta chicken pot pie that I made for my birthday 'cause it’s my favorite.

Anyway, you don’t have to like RR, but if you’re looking for easy, quick weeknight dinners, I wouldn’t turn my nose up at her recipes just 'cause she’s overly bubbly and cutesy. The recipes themselves are quite good.

Yay for the new fridge, Rebo! And for the new car Dotty! And for the good review, mmmmmmmms! I had a good review yesterday too.

Nava, I might have to let you know on a recipe-by-recipe basis… most of mine are stolen from somewhere else, and I wouldn’t want you to use them and then find out that it’s actually a copyrighted recipe!

I’ve heard, and I don’t have a cite for it, that recipes can’t be copyrighted. The book they’re in is copyrighted, the recipe isn’t.

Otherwise, blurf. Is the semester over yet?

ARRRGGGGGGH!!!

NOOOOOOO!!!

I told you this would be on the test. I told you the answer. I told you what you’d be tempted to write, but it would be wrong. I mentioned every class for two weeks.

You got it wrong.

This is not my fault.

No baby yet.

But plan to make a coconut cake with lime curd and mascarpone filling today. Anyone want some?

LiLi, when exactly should I come over for cake?

I hear you on the RR stuff, taxi… I feel very much the same way. Her general obnoxiousness and insistence on using cutesy words aside, RR has some pretty solid quick-fix recipes and I have no problem using them.

It’s sort of like I can’t stand Martha’s condescending tone in her shows, but I absolutely love the recipes on her website and will even admit to buying Everyday Food occasionally if I spot a really nice recipe on the cover.

It would take a total lobotomy to convince me to use one of Paula Deen’s recipes, though. :stuck_out_tongue:

STG, the copyright protection around recipes is actually a bit trickier than that. As a rule of thumb, you can’t copyright a basic list of ingredients - everyone knows that a pound each of sugar, butter, flour and eggs makes pound cake, so that part is essentially public domain.

However, you can copyright the instructions on how to combine those ingredients, because the way Julia Child would tell you to make poundcake is distinctly different from the way Craig Claiborne or Martha Stewart would tell you to make the exact same cake using the exact same ingredients. So recipes are technically protected by copyright, assuming you’re publishing the entire body and not just the ingredients.

Here’s a great articleby David Lebovitz on the subject.

WHAT? Waitaminnut!!! Speaking as a guy and a husband, I gotta stand up and say, “DON"T DO THAT!!! He’s got GOOD STUFF out there!!!”

We guys have to stand together and defend our territory against this sort of invasion. After all, where else would we be able to go to belch and fart and scratch and do all sorts of other manly deeds?

My wife keeps threatening to do this to my garage. I had to promise that there would be room for her car to fit inside when winter comes. When she starts parking outside, then I’ll start cleaning up and tidying up some. Until then, all my good stuff stays put.

But I am in the market for a decent band saw and a drill press. What’s hubby got?:stuck_out_tongue:

Mega-blurf. More later.

I have been in absentia so far this week. This weekend, we moved Bus Kid to Little Rock, AR. Yes, moved. A bunch of you know, she’s the one and only offspring, and except for a 3 semester stint in Ohio, hasn’t even been more than 40 minutes from home,

This is a MAJOR adjustment for us to be making, but it’s a positive thing. Her fiance’s company is opening a major venture down there, he’ll be there for about 5 years, they’re getting married next year, so it made sense for her to go down there now.

So, I’ve been kinda gloomy on and off, missing her and alternately convincing myself to be happy for her.

BTW, any mumpers in the Little Rock, or thereabouts region, message me, let me know if I can hold you in reserve as a quickie contact, ok, thanks!

{{MBG}} I don’t know anyone in Little Rock, but I’m sure she’ll be fine. I moved half way across the country from my family with my now-husband, and we’ve done just fine even though we didn’t know anyone when we moved here. But as the kid, it’s nice to know that the parent worries.

Muppet, sometimes I watch Paula just for a laugh. I have not made any of her recipes though.

MBG wants a <snerk> quickie <snerk> in Little Rock!

Wow, the Mumpers have been a busy bunch this week! Yay!

A happy birthday, belatedly, to BooFae; glad you had a great time in Hungary but are now home safe & sound.

Congrats to Rebo on the new fridge and Dotty on the new car!

And MBG, I know you’re worrying, but your daughter will be fine - you’ve learned her well, I think. My son is in Little Rock, but will be graduating from college (hopefully!) on May 1st, so only for the next month and a half.

My visit with the endocrinologist this morning went well, and I also picked out new frames for glasses; I should have the new glasses in a week or so, hopefully. I still need to lose weight, but what else could be new?! laughs Back to work tomorrow, but at least there will only be two more days until the weekend!

Hey, I’ve been to Little Rock! In August! It wasn’t the very smartest time to go.

Cake’s cooling, MiL is chopping veg for ratattaouille (which I can’t spell and don’t care) and I’m going to do a potato gratin to go with it, a little later. I have kitchen slaves who sous-chef: life is good.

Still no baby.

Muppet, what time do you finish work? You’re welcome any time, and we’ll frisk you at the door so you don’t walk off with the whole cake.

What, I can’t have the whole thing?

Pfft… forget it, then.

(actually, thanks for the offer, but I have to do a bunch of housework tonight lest the dustbunnies grow big enough to try to eat the cats… plus I’ve got two entire cakes in the fridge that were foisted upon me by Shopaholic Friend after her third [and final] wedding reception last weekend, so more cake would be a bad bad idea)

Could there ever be such a thing as too much cake?

Tonight is soup and sammich night at church followed by Evening Prayer/Eucharist. I’ve really been enjoyin’ these Wednesday nights. I might even keep it up on a semi-regular basis after Lent. Why yes, that glow is from my halo, why do you ask?

Yay on the new fridge Rebo and on new car delivery Dotty!

Special1 did that heart shaped waterbed you ordered for Apt. 304 arrive yet?
