When I first saw this map of Springfield (some time ago), I thought, “how creative!” If this was an assignment, and I a teacher, I would have given it an A.
I e-mailed it to a friend. The very next day he returned with a 3 word reply, “where’s Moe’s Tavern?”
I have searched and searched, but can not find it. I am impressed with the detail of various places that have been in Simpson’s episodes, even split-second backdrop places are listed. But no Moe’s Tavern, so I give you a 70. A grade of C-.
Because you forgot Moe’s Tavern, you are here in the Pit. Unless, of course, it is hiding somewhere with Waldo.
Continuity never seemed to be a big concern for them. The Simpsons have had something like 12 addresses. In one episode, we see that Moe’s Tavern is actually about 4 doors down from their house!
"Continuity never seemed to be a big concern for them…" etc.
Stop trying to blunt the force of my pedantic nickpicking!
Someone has clearly gone to a huge amount of trouble and effort to put that map together. It’s well researched, with loving attention to detail, and a much better job than I could have done.
But since this is the Pit, I can’t find the Stonecutters’ carpeted tunnel either! Which obviously means it isn’t there, since I never make mistakes and I looked for almost a minute.
I think it’s amazing that anyone can piece anything together from the deliberate hash the Simpson’s writers make out of continuity. I think the moment they learned of the following the show has, they decided to fuck with our heads as often and as vigorously as possible.
In other words, it isn’t possible to connect the episodes to each other in any but the most cursory ways, and it’s impossible to connect the series to the outside world, because the writers make it so. I applaud the effort but distinctly recognize its futility.
While I love the fact that two people have taken the time to map out Springfield for us I can’t help but think of one of my favorite scenes from Comic Book Guy.
Paraphrasing here:
(CBG reading comic) “But Aquaman, you can’t marry her. You come from two different worlds. She lives on land and you the sea”
[Bomb from France about to blow up Springfield. Comic Book Guy looks up and sees bomb]
It took less than 30 seconds to find Moe’s- you just had to remember that for “inventing” the Flaming Moe, he was dubbed the “Wizard of Walnut Street”.
