Oh oh oh, the gods and goddesses of Spam have heard my heart-felt cry for poultry Spam!!
I was at Safeway today when I saw…
A can of turkey Spam!!!!
My hands trembled as I picked up this light brown can and flipped it over to read the ingredients. Turkey, turkey parts… NO PORK!!! [i don’t eat pork] I stood in that spot, feet glued as my eyes watered in happiness.
I bought the can, took it home, and had turkey Spam musubi for dinner. Slices of Spam, grilled in the frying pan, hugging a fistful of white sticky rice and enveloped by sushi nori wrap…
Ohhhh, was soooo goooood! All the memories of Hawaii flooding back to me.
Quite a bit less fat, and made from white turkey meat!! I’m so happy!!! :>:>:>
did you not always have a pork prohibition? you seem to be well aware of the wonders of the foodstuff we all call preprocessed pressed pork shoulder, or SPAM.
Yes, I realize that. I just don’t really use salt at all. It’s a habit I picked up. I don’t even use it with rice dishes. This is one reason why I don’t tend to eat anything that has a distinct salt flavour to it.
[hijack my own thread]
jb_farley - I did used to eat pork. My choice to not eat pork these past four years is political, as a boycott against the North Carolinian swine industry. Seeing a dim future in tobacco, the state government there has looked very favorably towards swine farmers as providing a viable agribusiness.
The problem is that in its effort to foster new ventures, the state has not had strict environmental regulations. There are swine farms that rid their effluent (read: pig poop) by dumping it in a plastic-lined pits, unprocessed and raw!
The consequences have been horrific. Research into well-water sources near swine farms show that many wells are now contaminated beyond potability and cannot be used by the residents who have used them as their primary source of drinking water.
Worse, some people have linked the incidents of major fish kills to the swine industry. The nutrient-rich effluent has been getting into the estuarine ecology, and (according to researchers like Dr. Joann Burkholder at North Carolina State University), has caused the introduction of an extremely toxic dinoflagellate into the waters.
It has a name?!?! My mom used to make that for our lunch all the time when we were little. Except being Korean we had kimchee with ours. Wow, first I learn that seaweed is actually called nori, and then I find out that spam and rice and seaweed is an actual dish enjoyed by people not of the tatertot clan. Will wonders never cease?
::perks up:: Spam musubi? Did someone say Spam musubi?? Where?? Gimme! Hmmm, there’s a 7-11 up the street… Tatertot, you want me to grab a couple forya?
That’s it, I am moving to Hawaii. Why didn’t anybody tell me that they had cool food there? People here look at me and tater jr. like we’re crazy when we eat seaweed instead of potato chips.
I’m thinking of going to my Mom’s house today for rice, spam, nori and kimchee.
Tatertot, I will gladly ship you all the nori and other cool Hawaii foodstuff you want. Just ask about anything, and I’ll find something good and send it.
Thanks, Audrey but my Mom has her sources, so I get it from her. Good thing, too, it costs the earth here. Ten sheets of nori costs 2 bucks! That’s a snack for us! I really love those cute little lunchbox sized packs they sell.
I’m still going to move to Hawaii, though.
(And by the way, if you’re ever in the mood for some weinderschnitzel or fleishkase I’ll be happy to send you some.)
 Yipes! The brand we buy to munch on has about 100 pieces per $2 container. Cheap!
We’d be glad to have you!
Sometimes, when I’m playing pool and marvelling over a difficult shot, I’ll exclaim, “Weinderschnitzel!” I saw the word one day (I forget where) and thought it looked neat. It certainly is fun to say.
I should probably point out that I spelled “weinerschnitzel” wrong. I’m probably still not spelling it right, but there is definately no D in there. Next time, how about saying “sauerbraten”? Or maybe you can say “kip kerrie” in honor of Coldy?
And 2 dollars for 100 pieces?!?! That’s awesome! Is it the kind that is toasted and salted or just plain?
You know, we really need to start a thread that is just me, you, baglady and obby. Heck, I’ve got my own message board now, I’ll start us four (and DRY) our own forum. I’m sure the rest of the board is getting sick of all our in talking. Or, rather, y’alls in talking and me jealously looking in.
Spelling it wrong? Pah. I’m likely pronouncing it wrong!
“Kip kerrie!” Hey, I kinda like that.
As for the nori: darn, I’m spacing on the brand name (and since it’s nearly 3am here, I can’t go stomping into the kitchen to go check) but it’s fairly commonplace around here. Two bucks is the sale price, and it’s on sale pretty often. It’s not toasted and it is a little salty, but I find it perfectly seasoned. It’s kind of got a hot (as in peppers hot) taste. Great stuff. You can practically eat the whole container and not realize it.
I’ll ask papa about the brand, though. Maybe your mom can get it for you, and if not, then I certainly will.
