St. Patrick's Day Playlists!

I was bored the other night and made one on last.fm. There are a few ‘Irish’ songs on it, but mostly I went with the titles of the tracks just for fun.

  1. Gallo – St. Patrick’s Party

  2. Tom Jones – Green Green Grass of Home

  3. The Pogues Featuring The Dubliners – The Irish Rover

  4. Willie Nelson – Whiskey River

  5. Cab Calloway – Pickin The Cabbage

  6. Reel Big Fish – Beer

  7. Against Me! – Pints of Guinness Make You Strong

  8. Dropkick Murphys – Kiss Me, I’m Shitfaced

  9. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – Another Drinkin’ Song

  10. The 5.6.7.8’s – One Potato

  11. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes – Rainbow Connection

  12. Bruce Springsteen – It’s Hard to Be a Saint in the City

  13. Tommy James & The Shondells – Crimson And Clover

  14. The Stone Roses – Fool’s Gold

  15. Sesame Street – Bein’ Green

  16. Garth Brooks – Ireland

  17. Ben Folds – The Luckiest

One of the local radio stations celebrated St’ Patrick’s Day yesterday (it was moved this year, of course, due to conflicts with Holy Week) by playing Green Day all day long.

probably not exactly what you were looking for…

heh
I was getting ready to mention them!
Bothy Band

Love the Bothy Band–and Patrick Street

Capercaillie

and some Ashley McIsaac goes down well

That’s what I’m listening to right now  Next up: Morrissey “Irish Blood, English Heart.” I’m disappointed to discover that “Celtic Aggression” by Tonic is somehow missing from my MP3 collection. I’ll have to rip it again later today.

Andrew Lloyd Webber & Ben Elton’s The Beautiful Game

No mention of classic U2, The Cranberry’s, The Corrs or Enya?

Dropkick Murphys’ Barroom Hero, Finnegan’s Wake and Fields of Athenry are indispensable today.

Here’s my little St. Patrick’s Day playlist:

  • Thin Lizzy - Roisin Dubh

  • House of Pain - Jump Around (listening to it as I type)

  • Enya - Ebudae

  • Clannad - Harry’s Game

  • Sinead O’Connor - I Am Stretched on Your Grave

  • The Pogues with Kirsty McColl - Fairytale of New York (more of a Xmas song, I know)

-Sinead O’Connor and Shane McGowan - Haunted

-U2 - Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For

  • The Cranberries - Dreams (I would’ve put Zombie, but I really wasn’t in the mood to consider the Troubles)

  • Sharon Shannon - Blackbird

  • Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in the Jar

-U2 - Vertigo

The one song I couldn’t find, and didn’t want a live version, was “At The Ceili”, sung at one of the Celtic Woman concerts.

The Muppets version of *Danny Boy * deserves mention

Its the Clancy Brothers’ white sweaters they’re wearing that really make this hilarious.

I hope it’s okay to bump this for this year.

The Chieftains with Elvis Costello–The Long Journey Home

I also like Gaelic Storm’s Titanic Set

I still like House of Pain. There, I said it again.

Lotsa damn fine stuff here. Keeping in the Celtic rock/punk vein, we need to add Enter The Haggis, The Young Dubliners and The Real McKenzies to the playlist.

The Corrs

The Elders

Connie Dover

I have heard about a young, up and coming Irish musician named George Ivan Morrison…

He might make a name for himself in the music world someday, if he isn’t just another flash in the pan!!!

The Fenians.

Listen on that site, or download their greatest hits album “You Couldn’t Have Come at a Better Time” from iTunes.

God, I am such a fangirl… An Gadai, have I flogged the Fenians in enough threads of yours yet?

Anything from The Boys from the County Hell should be on the playlist.

During Mardi Gras they call themselves, “The Boys from the Parish Hell.”

The Clancy Brothers with Tommy Duncan - Four Green Fields
The Clancy Brothers with Tommy Duncan - Finnegan’s Wake
The Clancy Brothers with Tommy Duncan - Irish Rover
Eric Clapton - *Derry Aire *(instrumental)
Dennis Day - Danny Boy
Alton - *Barbara Allen *(not really a St. Pat’s song, but in Gaelic)
The Chieftans with Sinead O’Connor - The Foggy Dew
The Chieftans with Mick Jagger - The Long Black Veil

These and a bottle of Jameson’s to start the day!

Steeleye Span - “Cam Ye O’er Frae France”

Sandy Denny - “Listen Listen”

Kate Bush:

“Jig Of Life”

“Mná na hÉireann”

“The Handsome Cabin Boy”

“Night of the Swallow” (ok, it doesn’t sound Irish at the beginning, but soon the boys from Planxty and The Chieftains kick in. This is my favorite song ever by anybody.)

Most the Irish songs on my mp3 player are already listed but here is one you guys missed.

Eric Clapton’s instrumental version of Danny Boy
