Ever since I first saw these guys(?) on Next Generation, I have been fascinated. Who are they? What do they do? I used to dream up all kinds of weird ideas for them: They were around to keep an eye on everyone else for some third party, and the masks were so that no one would recognize them sneaking around. I liked to believe that the reason that they weren’t conquered or attacked by anyone else is that everybody knew that they were some bad boys. They even had, I think, a Ferengi Rule of Aquisition (sp) named after them. I dunno, maybe I should think about more important stuff…nahhhh.
A breen was in the Dominion prision with Bashir, Worf, and Garak, and died trying to escape. It is unknown if he was replaced on his homeworld by a founder. The breen also get pregnant young, which the Doctor on Voyager said. And they talk like “hasrgjasgjasnaslkasdlasglkasj” and look like Leia when she was undercover as Bousch.
Also, it is beleived their home planet is cold, and that is why they wear refridgerator suits, but Weyoun said their home planet was really warm, and no one knows why they wear the suits.
Even more fascinating: they never appeared on ST:TNG. They were mentioned but never seen. The first reference was in the 4th season episode “The Loss.” The second mention in “Hero Worship” a year later added the reference to Breen helmets.
They were first seen in person in the DS9 episode “Indiscretion” as guards at a prison camp. They didn’t play a significant role in Trek events until their alliance with the Dominion brought about the ending of the war (and the series).
That they would unmask a Breen b4 the DS9 finale, but they didn’t. (Not sure if I expected Carrie Fisher). It is not like they didnt kill any to unmask (maybe thier suits are set to self destuct?)
Ok, so I made a small mistake. I really thought they were seen in NextGen. I guess the fact that Worf was on DS9 confused my memory.
And I am sure that biological technology being used in ships was not unique to Babylon 5. That's just the only other sci-fi series I had seen at that point, and so was my only basis for comparison.
Did you just pull those references out of your head, TheeGrumpy? If so, as Arbiter of Geekdom, I declare thee a True Reservoir of Geekishness, to be affectionately known as a Dam Geek.
Yondan:Did you just pull those references out of your head, TheeGrumpy?
Honesty, I had to look up “The Loss,” because I wasn’t sure if “Hero Worship” was the first reference or not. Turns out it was second. They also get a name-drop in “ST:Generations” BTW.
Well then, since your contribution was not made without technical assistance, you cannot qualify as a Dam Geek. However, because your post nevertheless was quite potent in its impact and packed such a powerful force, you clearly merit the title of Blasted Geek.
