ST: TNG Best Of?

For anyone who’s not at work, and who has basic cable, these three episodes are all playing on SpikeTV today and tomorrow.

“Deja Q” and “A Matter of Perspective” are on at 3pm and 4pm respectively today (4/17) and “Yesterday’s Enterprise” is on at 2pm tomorrow (4/18).

Excellent episode; one of my favorites.

A Matter of Honor

Riker participates in an officer exchange program, and transfers to a Klingon ship.

That’s another of my favorites. For one thing, I thought Troi looked hotter as a Romulan than she ever did as a Betazoid. Of course, I thought she looked better in the cerulean standard-issue uniform than in those custom jobs she used to wear

My favorite aspect of this episode, though, was the Romulan Commander Toreth. Her character really struck me as someone who, despite her high military rank in an “evil” government, was basically a decent, moral person who loved her people. She seemed to recognize the problems with her government, but did her job to the best of her ability in order to protect her people rather than to fight for the glory of the Romulan Empire. Kind of like the Romulan captain in The Chase.

I liked the one where the holodeck malfunctioned, thereby placing some of the crwemembers in deadly peril.

I’m more fond of the ones where the transporter is the cause of and solution to a major problem.

So, the transporter is like alcohol?

Yes, beer is the answer.

I prefer the one where Geordi modifies the deflector dish to perform a task it’s not designed for.

I like the episode where the first shot that the enemy ship fires basically breaks the Enterprise.

Nah, the best episode was the one where it turned out to be extremely fortunate that the Enterprise had an android among the crew, because nobody else could have possibly solved the problem quickly enough to avert disaster.

Not the I mind the bumps…but come on people. If you want to grumble about Star Trek plotholes, it’s not all that hard to start a new thread. (Or find an old one to read through.)

They’re not griping about plotholes but making fun of the plots of several episodes. I mean, several episodes could be summarized as “holodeck goes haywire and holograms become real” or “transporter problems” or “Data wants to become a real boy” or so on. It’s like saying “I enjoy the time-travel episodes” for Voyager, except I don’t know anyone who liked the time-travel episodes in Voyager.

It’s too bad that amongst all the griping, people forget that many of those episodes were actually original when they aired. TNG was very fresh when it came out. Unfortunately all the extra trek that has come since has turned much of it into cliche.

I just saw this one a week or two ago. Actually, as Picard explains, he did like her and specifically requested her for Enterprise. The stern dressing-down he gave her in the episode is just a test, so see if she is willing to stand up and defend herself and to evaluate her for the dangerous mission he wants to send her on. Don’t blame Riker for this one!
