Standing on top of the world (or near it)

Take a look at this list or look at this page or even check out this map and then let us in on how many of these “high points” you’ve been on. How many others have you been near enough to see?

Before I was born, my dad had a picture of himself made where he was on top of the observation tower at Mt. Mitchell (NC) with his hands on the tower and his feet in the air. He was being helped to hold himself in a handstand by a couple of other people. He liked to brag that he had had his feet higher than anybody east of the Mississippi and still been connected to the ground (or however he put it to distinguish from being in a plane).

I have yet to get to the Mt. Mitchell tower, but I have been to Clingman’s Dome (TN) and Mt. Cheaha (AL) and the High Point Tower (NJ). On one trip not long ago, we saw the high points of NY, VT, NH, NJ, VA, WV, and TN from the road on the same trip.

Have any of you been to all of the ones in the USA?

FWIW, look at this page for a jumping off place for the high points in the rest of the world.

Jeez! Talk about a dud topic! Only 18 views and (until now) 0 replies.

I’ve posted some losers all right, but I can’t believe nobody has ever made it a point to get to the high point somewhere and lived to tell about.

Maybe I’m just weird that way.

I have it on good authority that I have been to Black Mesa, Oklahomo; but I was too young at the time to remember.

Does that count?
