Holy crap! That’s just bizarre. (Especially the font business.)
Interesting stuff.
I agree that his obsession with details like the hooker’s doorway looks wasteful but in a way, it is this attention to every single frame that comes through successfully when you watch the films. Well-crafted, sculpted scenes.
From the documentaries I’ve seen with Stanley Kubrick, his perfectionism goes almost beyond belief. He made Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise repeat scenes for hours, to have a perfect selection - despite the fact that the scenes would appear second long in the movie. Of course, with such a well-respected director, they wouldn’t object.
That Napoleon obsession is really fascinating. To think that it never led to a finished script.
All that attention to detail and he never picked up on the fact that the script for ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ was horrible?
He made MUCH better movies in his earlier, less kooky, years, if you ask me. “Dr. Strangelove” was genius.
